Are anime and Japanese pop culture becoming popular in China?

I know the Chinese still hate almost anything Japanese, but are the younger ones at least a little bit more open-minded? And do even the Chinese people who don’t think much of Japan like some of their pop culture?

How do you know the Chinese still hate almost anything Japanese?

Japanese pop culture stuff is popular in China, even among young people who will reflexively say they don’t like Japan.

Porn is as popular in China as anywhere else, and almost all of it is Japanese.

I read a thought-provoking article about this, which talked specifically about the dichotomy between many Chinese hating the Japanese while still lusting after them, but I’m at my work computer, and can’t think of a way to safely google for it.

That’s what many Chinese people, and Westerners who have lived there/live there, have told me.

I see throngs of Chinese tourists all over Tokyo daily. Many train station signs in the city are in Chinese hanzi. And lots come here to live, work or study (see below. Cite: http: // www. moj. go. jp /content / 000081973 .pdf ). PDF Warning.

Been in China for close to two months now. A lot of the kids say they hate Japan but they can’t explain why. Often the older ones are a bit more open minded about it.

I live in Beijing. Quite a lot of the cars here are Japanese. Many of my students enjoy Japanese anime, J-pop, and other aspects of Japanese culture.
