Are Bush's cabinet appointees just too damn old?

How can he dredge up people from the FORD administration?

What’s next, a place for Henry Kissenger at the U.N.?

Let the old retire. We don’t need a lot of people in charge of the government who can no longer give the time and energy required. That’s why we have manditory retirement ages in many government departments.

Remember, he is a conservative. What could be more conservative than bringing back folks from the good ol’ days?

They could bring back Ronald Reagan. He’s not dead yet.
And he’s more alert than Strom Thurmond.

He can’t help it – his Poppy doesn’t know a lot of young people.

(Though given Dubya’s idea of “‘youhful’ indiscretion,” I think he considers “young” to be “under 50”…)

Rumsfield, under the Ford administration, was the youngest Secretary of Defense in history.

Of course, now he’s 68 (IIRC).

To parahprase Jon Stewart, it’s like the 80s Greatest Hits.

I know, it’s awful, isn’t it?

I mean, if Bill Clinton were President, you’d NEVER see him appoint a 72 year old like Lloyd Bentsen to an important position like Treasury Secretary. Oh… okay, bad example.

And a 68 year old hack like Warren Christopher would NEVER stand a chance of being appointed Secretary of State in the administration of young, dynamic Bill CLinton. Ooops, sorry, that was another bad example.

But the point is, ancient retreads from the long-ago LBJ administration would NEVER have a place in the Clinton WHite House. You think a young stud like CLinton would ever turn to an old geezer like Joe Califano for advice?

Um…

Look, fact is, ANYONE who’s elected President is going to load his Cabinet with people who’ve had experience the relevant fields. A LOT of those men and women are going to be retreads from previous administrations. And very FEW of them are going to be 20 or 30-somethings.

I have no problem with it, as long as they don’t drive.

If this were the Pit, I’d smack the OP upside his head for being an outrageous age-ist.

Tsk tsk. We’re not getting older, we’re getting better, Tadpole. Dincha know that?

Yeah, and he’s packed his administration with geezers like Condi Rice and Christie Whitman. Ann Veneman, Mel Martinez, and Don Evans are all about Bush’s age.

In other words, his cabinet is probably going to be as young as Clinton’s, or close to it.

Depending on your ideology there are plenty of reasons to dislike Bush. But the age of his cabinet is not one of them.

This is going to be fun - I got to watch various Republicans and conservatives marginalize themselves for four years by attacking Clinton on irrelevant issues. Now the Liberals get to do it.
