Are cats only interested in food?

My cat likes to roll around.

I envy anyone that can just walk outside on a sunny day onto the grass and just roll around joyfully in the sun.

I usually watch out the window while sitting at my computer typing out my term paper.

Mine is definately more interested in affection than anything else. If it is at all possible for her to be curled up with her head resting on my cheek, then she’ll do it, and if I have to adjust myself or stop what I’m doing to make that happen, well, that’s just too bad for me. She’ll keep trying no matter how many times I chuck her away from me.

Heck, some days she’s felt so “deprived” of attention that while she’s eating, she’ll stop, run back over to me, curl up for a quick scritcheling, then race to the food bowl, wolf down a few bites, and then start the whole process over again.

This sounds familiar. Tybalt, the Fuzzy Black Land Shark, was somewhat distant and standoffish until he got sick (diarrhea, dehydration, etc) and had to spend three nights at the vet’s office. When he came back, he was transformed. He used to show affection by curling up on the couch next to you, a few inches away, just far enough that he could stretch out a leg and touch you with the tip of his foot. Now he’s a full-on lap cat. Pretty remarkable change.

Little Bear (almost 17 yo) is on my lap right now, and as I type he’s pushing up on my wrist with the top of his head, deliberately making it really hard to type. He loves doing this.

His little sister Maya (7 months today) is busy fetching bottle caps that I throw. This is her favorite game. She comes up to me and drops a bottle cap near me and waits for me to throw it. Then she brings it back, like a mama cat bringing a mouse for her kittens. She even leaves bottle caps near Little Bear, expecting him to throw them for her, but he’s not interested in playing that game.

Food? Oh yeah, they like food too.

My Dear Departed Clawdia was, as the young folks say, all about the food. I’m guessing it had something to do with the fact that she’d been an alley cat before we got her.

Although she did love to sit beside my dad in his chair… she’d wedge her big ole fat self right in there. He’d scratch her head til she got overstimulated and chomped him. I loved that cat, even if she was a biter!

Mine REQUIRE attention and snuggles. My boy cat sometimes charges across the room, bounds up into my lap, and throws himself into his arms. He then makes me hug him for at least five minutes. My girl cat wants attention too but isn’t so demonstrative. If I close my bedroom door at night, they will sit outside and yowl until I let them in. They want to be near me at all times. They do not like it when I leave the apartment.

Our kitties are all about the cuddles. Food is good, great even, but attention is best.

Anjali (rescued from a parking lot) rides around on my shoulders whenever I let him. Fun, he is part Maine Coon.

Ariadne is standoffish, but is upset if we are not here

Anthrax meows incessantly for affection if she thinks she is not getting enough. She also follows us everywhere. Bathroom (resulting in only one fall into the bath so far), cleaning, everything. She MUST be involved.

Kali climbs all over us constantly, hunting and finding our hands for petting if we hide them under something

Onyx is the same, and cries if he cannot find us

They greet us at the door whenever we come home, anxious to see us and assure us that we are loved.
