I’m looking at getting a new printer, and as I don’t really print any pictures out and I’m on a network with a decent laserjet I thought about getting a laser.
Searching around the net, I found some here that are very cheap, but are they worth getting instead of a similar price inkjet?
Does anyone have any reccomendations?
I bought a cheap Samsung recently. It looks exactly like the one you linked to, but I think its model number was ML-1701. It cost $80 after rebates, and so far I love it.
After my latest inkjet stopped working I was debating on reviving my old LaserWriter IIg for the cost of a new toner cartridge ($80) or buying a new cheap laser. So far I think I made the right decision.
I have really given up on inkjet printers, I’ve never had one last for more than two years (usually less). The cost of ink is outrageous, and you have to buy more every so often whether you use it or not. They have many cheap moving parts that break or get out of alignment (the reason that they don’t last). A laser printer is actually a much simpler device (mechanically), and they usually last for ages.
There are 7 printers within 4 metres of me. On a home network. Yes, I’m nuts. I get the ink for free. What is the unkillable workhorse? A Lexmark E210 laser, which I got for less than the cost of a new cartridge—and when the day comes that the magic smoke comes out, it’s replacement is downstairs in a box. The output is waterproof, smudgeproof and fast. Only drawback is it is black and white----The other printers start at six colors and go up from there…
Print servers are my friend
I have this printer, for pure b&W it’s fine, but for greyscale it’s horriable. Printing out maps from MS Streets and trips the roads are almost unreadable due to it being so lite, but the HP 1200 prints very sharp maps easilly readable - though the 1200 doesn’t always correctly allign the page.
Perhaps some adjustment can be made, but I tryed and just use the other printer.
Another caution, it is possiable that the cheap laser printers use the ‘sell the unit below cost and charge more for the cartrages to make up the difference’ - I have a feeling the Lexmart 210 is one of those types.
Mrs. Kunilou’s beloved Canon printer started giving up the ghost while she was trying to get end-of-term work finished this weekend. I lent her my Samsung ML-1710. She hadn’t gotten 10 pages printed before she deicided she wants a laser for her own.
Its quite possible that the Samsung is that way. It comes with a ‘starter’ cartridge thats only good for 1000 prints. It doesn’t really matter though, because a new cartridge costs $80 or so and is good for 3000 pages. At that price/page it blows away inkjets, and the side benefit is that the toner doesn’t dry out 6 months after you open it.
Does it ever dry out? I mainly ues my printer for college assignments, so I won’t print anything for a few weeks or a month, then print lots together which my inkjet doesn’t like!
