Are chickens being bred to have larger wings?

Today, I bought the usual brand of frozen sectioned chicken wings that I buy for Buffalo wings, and these suckers were HUGE! The “drumette” sections were about 3.5" long. I’ll swear that I’ve seen drumsticks carved from whole chickens we’ve roasted that were not much larger.

I remember ordering wings in restaurants 15-20 years ago, and they were little. Two inches, max. A nosh, not a meal.

What gives?

I know in the 70’s Tyson bred chickens with more white meat. The birds could harly stand upright.
So I suppose enough time has elapsed for them to do that with wings now.
But I doubt it. There’s still the premium for white meat.
But they may be more active in grading and sorting wings than they once were - reserving large ones for wing servings and just tossing the smaller ones into the soup bucket.

But wings are white meat!

The upper section (drum like-single bone) is white, while the lower (2 bone and tip section) are dark.

Tyson and Perdue are in a race to breed the biggest chicken, and it’s hard to find a skinless, boneless chicken breast that isn’t eight ounces or more.

In an experimental program, 1756 especially feisty oversize chickens were released in locations scattered around New York City by researchers from the U. of South Carolina in hopes of curbing the cockroach and rat populations. In the first two weeks, the chickens killed and ate tens of thousands of rats and roaches. The chickens got even bigger and stronger. Some of them began attacking small children and Yorkshire Terriers. After ten weeks, tracking teams were finding fewer chickens to report on. Professor Sheldon Devane made the call to stop the project. He sent his teams out to capture and remove the big birds. They didn’t find many. Out of the original 1756 subjects, only 64 were recovered. Some were allegedly killed and eaten by homeless people, and the rest are still out there somewhere, breeding.

If you spot a group of these birds, don’t go near them. Call Prof. Devane at U. of South Carolina.

I’ve always wondered if the chickens in Buffalo are a funny breed or just work out a lot or something, because the wings they have there in the groceries and bars are just massive. Every Buffalonian I’ve met complains about the size of chicken wings in other parts of the US. I wonder if these birds are just spreading around the country now. I sure would love to find big wings like that here in Chicago.

Leghorn is the most common egg layer. the web site saying their about 4.5 pounds. The Jersey Giant is about 10 pounds. The larger breeds have been out there a long time. Maybe their switching to one of the larger breeds, because of the popularity of hot wings. Please note the color variations of the eggs. We got quit an assortment of colors and sizes from the egg farm down the road, when I was a kid. I bet you wouldn’t imagine a blue or green egg being laid by a chicken.
