Why would you care if they’re “in” or “out”?
You’re a Doper, which means above such silly things as folowing fashion.
I own about 4 denim jackets … then again I’m somewhat out of touch with what is fashionable.
Anyway, Gary Olen at the Sportsmans Guide usually has a good selection:
Yup. The Women’s Vintage is pretty much exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t really care if they’re out of style or not…I was just curious because they aren’t in the stores I’d expect to carry them. I always thought they were a staple; like jeans and T-shirts.
In The Netherlands, the basic jean jackets is only avaiable in stores for gardening supplies. The kind of store where farmers come to buy udder ointment, and weedkillers in bulk, and sturdy wellington boots, you know?
I don’t know what the American equivalent to those stores is, but I’d look there, if all you need is a jacket to work in and it needn’t be fashionable.
That’s a thought. We’ve got a Farm and Fleet about 10 miles from here. They are very big on denim work clothes. Thanks!
And of course there’s always LL Bean.
Well let’s see my Jean jacket no longer bears the pins and frays of my 80’s concert days, but I do still have a Levi Jean Jacket. I wear it in the fall sometimes, and on occasion in the spring. Basically we had no winter this year so I wore it more, but yes, I still do wear it.
I think my wife looks absolutely HOT in hers when she wears it with her khaki capris and a navy blue top! Add a Yankee cap and oh boy!
I think the classic jean jacket on women is one of those items that is not trendy but is classic and can’t be “out”. Just like classic jeans. For the right guy, they are just fine as well.
Well, Gap isn’t exactly the ‘fashion staples’ store that their minimalist design might have you believe. Especially for women. If you look at their blouses and sweaters, they tend to a fair number of the ‘latest trends’ textures and colors. Really, just because its not at Gap I wouldn’t say that means its out of date.
After successfully avoiding The Gap for a good decade or more, I was surprised to see that they’ve gone Hip Wannabe. I remember when they were the denim staples store. I guess I haven’t been paying attention. What, with my perfectly fitting Vicki’s Dirty Nasty Icky Trampy Little Secret jeans that I simply cannot live without.
The only person I know who wears a jean jacket is a grandmother. A young, pleasant, and funny grandmother, but still… (I can sense all the twenty-year-olds reading this thread recoiling in horror.)
Clothes aren’t available year-round. When I needed a new denim jacket, I had to wait until they were in-season, and in-season wasn’t spring and fall, it was one or the other. I don’t recall for certain, but I think it was fall when they were available in stores. So maybe you just need to wait six months.
London Jeans? or other Vicki jeans?? I lived in the London Jeans Classic ones.
Now they don’t work for me.
Hey, Kalhoun the 80’s called. It wants it’s jacket back!
Hey, somebody had to say it!
There are jean jackets and jean jackets.
If your talking about a jean jacket like this, I don’t think your going to make a fashion statement

I defy you to go to the mall or look in any of the better stores and tell me you don’t see denim jackets that are trendy. Granted they don’t snap up the front and match your jeans but denim is still in style.
Here’s one

$145!?!?!?!?!?
If you go to Lands’ End and search for “denim jacket,” there are several options. The last one on the page is a plain old no fancy crap jean jacket. I got mine from them several years ago, and I love it.
I have no knowledge of whether they are in or out. Gilda Radner (I think) said that she based her fashion sense on what doesn’t itch. I heartily agree. I tend to wear jeans, black pants, or khakis with a black or white shirt 90% of the time. I throw in a red shirt sometimes because red looks fabulous on me. So I’m not exactly a fashionista, and you may not want to follow my lead with the jean jacket thing. It’s up to you.
But if I find you wearing leg warmers, I may be forced to send you back to the 80s, forcibly. In a De Lorean, with no means of return. That goes for all of you, by the way.
I always say whatever you feel comfortable in and looks best on you go for it.
As for actually finding a jean jacket, in my experience you can only find sweaters and outerwear when you don’t need it. If the weather’s already turned chilly, then the stores are putting out the spring stuff.
I think they’re about as “out” as denim ever is. Which just means they’ll be in style again and back out before the jacket is worn out. Get what you like.
The 80s? Pfffft. I was going to tell Kalhoun that it still goes well with buffalo sandals, a leotard and a wrap around Indian skirt.
