Are Corn Tortillas Common in your Supermarket?

In another thread we were discussing tortillas. The only tortillas that I can buy are flour tortillas.

I’ve never seen corn tortillas at the grocery store. I’m in Ontario, Canada. How weird is this for you and where are you located?

I live in California. The tortilla section takes up about 1/3 of a side of an aisle. I get corn tortillas pretty often for taco-making.

No.

Thailand.

Imported.

$6 a box.

They’re right next to the flour/spinach/tomato/whole wheat/high fiber/whatnot tortillas and wraps, near either the bread aisle or the Mexican food aisle depending on the store.

They’re available here in Indianapolis at pretty much any grocer, but the selection is paltry compared to flour tortillas. Of course, there’s a wider, fresher variety available at pretty much any tienda.

Atlanta: yep, pretty common, at least in the grocery stores in my part of town.

Though I generally end up at the place that sells fresh made flour tortillas.

They’re right next to the flour tortillas at the grocery store here in Virginia.

Depends on what you mean by corn. Most of the Spanish supermarkets which carry tortillas carry wheat ones, rather than maize: for maize, better go to one of those corner stores which sell anything smaller than a car. Latin American-owned ones are the best option, but I’ve seen maize tortillas in “Paki”*-owned and Spaniard-owned stores as well.

  • For some reason that’s become the generic term, but many of them came here from the UK, and went there from India.

I’m in Michigan, not too far from Ontario, in a small town, and corn tortillas are in just about every grocery store.

This is Texas. All kinds of tortillas are available in most stores. Many stores make them on the premises…

Corn tortillas are generally in the refrigerated section in my stores. Maybe check there in yours?

I’m not really a tortilla eater, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them in our grocery stores here in south central PA

Their corn tortillas are available in Toronto.

Really–fresh flour tortillas make good breakfast tacos or burritos; they often accompany fajitas & other specialties from Northern Mexico. But corn tortillas taste better & are absolutely necessary for most dishes–such as enchiladas…

(Even down here, some places use flour tortillas for seafood enchiladas–supposedly they are crepe-like. Cooked in a sauce, they become library paste!)

Very common in DC.

Really? Corn tortillas shouldn’t be kept in the cold, it will dry them out.

My biggest gripe about moving to New Jersey has been the lack of access to Mexican food. It’s not that it doesn’t exist, it’s just that it takes searching (I am assuming it’s because it isn’t popular). My local grocery store doesn’t carry ANY tortillas. The next closest one carries only flour tortillas, the next one after that sometimes has corn tortillas but only sometimes. But there is a Latin market a couple of towns away that sells anything I could want including tortillas (and banana leaves and corn husks and dried peppers etc.)

Weirdly, it has turned out that WalMart has the best Mexican food selection if I don’t want to drive all the way out to the Latin market.

South Florida. We’ve got 'em.

**Leaffan **- I’d offer to bring some up next time I get sent to the home office, but I’d have to check if I’m allowed to bring it across the border. Plus, someone upthread said they’re available in Toronto.

I can choose between multiple brands and varieties and pack sizes of flour tortillas, but I can only get corn tortillas in an El Paso Enchilada kit.

Suburbs of Chicago: I can find them in almost any supermarket. The size and location of the store just make a difference in how many local tortilla-makers’ brands are represented. And I mean the soft corn tortilla kind, not the fried hard shells in mass-marketed kits.

I actually have to hunt to find the flour ones sometimes…it’s corn, corn, corn all the way down the row.

Of course, I’m in the city itself, in a neighborhood known for it’s Hispanic population, shopping at grocery stores staffed by immigrants from Mexico. I’m actually kind of surprised there are so many ready made tortillas in this neighborhood - I would have expected it to be the staple that Abuela made every night with her own hands, not something you’d buy at the store. But apparently Abuela’s got more important stuff to do these days, just like Grandma.

I live in upper NY State. In the refrigerated case next to the cheese, yogurt, and canned crescent rolls is a vast selection of flour tortillas. (also flavored, spinach, tomato, herb wraps found in the deli or in the bread section). The (soft) CORN tortillas are there, too, next to the flour ones, but only one smallish size. There are of course plenty of hard white and yellow corn chips (made for scooping up dips) in the snack aisle. Aldi’s sells flour and big packs of corn tortillas, unrefrigerated.
