Are Deaths Like Corey Montieth's Common

If it’s so well known among addicts that their tolerance will be significantly lower after leaving rehab, why is it so common for them to behave as if they didn’t know? This is what I’ve never understood. (my bolding)

I don’t think people realize just how low their tolerance can get. Also, junkies who have used for a long time, in the back of their minds, think they can handle any dose.

Sadly, on this subject I am an expert.

Let me amend that. There are addicts who know something about biology and how substances affect their bodies. There are addicts who are morons. The morons tend to die off more and the smart ones occasionally fuck up. Don’t know which one this actor guy was.

This is why it makes so goddam much sense for governments/authorities to* support*, not oppose, making marijuana easy, (relatively) cheap, safe, and quasi-legal to purchase and use.

As I understand it this issue was a big part of the Netherlands establishing decriminalization and cannabis coffeeshops starting in the 1970’s. The idea was: if you make it easy and acceptable for people to obtain cannabis then they’d never find themselves in situations where street pushers who were temporarily out of weed would push (ha!) the customer to buy heroin or other hard drugs instead.

Very sensible.

Of course in this country (USA), the “party line” is there’s no difference between hard and soft drugs. Here, they are* all* considered hard drugs and hence eeeeeevil and deadly. (Except, of course, if they are named alcohol or tobacco, which means they’re perfectly fine).
