If you want to make a million dollars, open up a package liquor store on the northwest side of Springfield, Illinois (fellow Springfield residents: yes, I know about the one at 1831 W Jefferson). If you want to get even more convenient, make it a drive-thru like the one I used to patronize back when I lived in Missouri…
Anyway, I’ve never seen a drive-thru liqour store in Illinois. For that matter, I’ve never heard of a liquor store that delivers, anywhere.
So, are these legal in Illinois?
City of Springfield, Sangamon County, if you wanna get all technical and stuff.
I don’t know about the legality of drive-thrus state wide. If there are any laws, it’s probably a city or county thing. But otherwise, I know of one in Waukegan.
We’ve got plenty of drive-through liquor stores here in Decatur, although I have never seen a liquor delivery service here. My guess would be that it’s an economic decision–their customers come to them, so they don’t have to deliver, so they don’t.
The same way McDonalds doesn’t deliver. They don’t have to, so they don’t.
Looks like delivery’s okay in Illinois, but the delivery person has to get the signature of someone over 21 at the delivery address: 235 ILCS 5/6‑16 .
I don’t know any place in Spiffeld that delivers – the penalties are pretty high if they get caught delivering to someone under 21, so it may be a risk thing.
I recall a delivery liquor store in Iowa City. I believe it was called Ajax Liquors (if anyone else remembers). It was a couple of doors down from the library…
Sam’s Wine and Spirits in Chicago will deliver. I’m in charge of a weekly beer-and-pizza get-together for the graduate students in my division, and about once a month we buy ~15 cases of beer & ~20 cases of soda from them. They charge an extra $20 or so for the delivery, though, so it’s really only economical when you’re ordering stuff in quantity like we do.
