Are female athletes trying to destroy male culture?

I know we have had threads on title IX before and I don’t want to argue that again, I just thought this column was particularly odious. How can a woman hate other women with such intensity?

Phyllis Schlafly

Male culture? I didn’t know we had a culture. Why didn’t anyone tell me we had a culture? What else are you bastards keeping from me?

Burp Hey, check out the redhead with the gorgeous ta-tas over there!

Me stupid man. Me thought wrestling got cut 'cuz it don’t rake in dough like futball and baskaball do.

Me grunt, scratch.

Why aren’t there more male softball teams? It’s not fair. Women’s softball teams should be shut down UNLESS there are male softball teams.

In fairness to Ms. Schlafly’s argument, she is contending that the application of Title IX to the funding of teams is the culprit – that, absent the spending requirements imposed by Title XI, even a team that does not rake in dough would survive.

So that’s the argument that needs to be addressed, I think.

Although I don’t buy Phyllis Schaffley’s argument that liberal feminists are trying to prevent social conservatives by attacking the “male culture” of men’s collegiate athletics, I fail to see why Icerigger views the column as intense hatred towards women. That seems an over reaction to me (to put it mildly).

Ice, what exactly is so hateful about the column? Not what’s wrong with it, there’s plenty of that, but what’s hateful?

Okay. I’ve read it like three times and it still doesn’t make much sense to me. And I’m a woman, and a conservative (at least fiscally):

"Men on sports teams act like men, and the feminists are hostile to the male culture. What does “act like men” mean? What is “the male culture”? College football produces social conservatives such as Jack Kemp, Steve Largent, J.C. Watts and the late Supreme Court Justice Byron White. College wrestling programs brought us conservative stalwarts Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Speaker Dennis Hastert. Track and field yielded Jim Ryun, one of the greatest milers of all time and now a Congressman. So what? Who’s to say female “conservative stalwarts” won’t also be produced, if we’re taking the huge step of equating physical prowess with conservatism? While football players are known to date cheerleaders, women collegiate athletes are not known to chase quarterbacks. What? What does that have to do with anything? Is dating cheerleaders (or quarterbacks) a positive thing? This makes no sense at all. The radical feminists’ hostility toward men is manifested in the abolition of sports in which men excel, such as wrestling. Or, alternatively, the abolition of some male sports is an unfortunate by-product of demanding that women’s sports be funded at the same level. Why must everything that is pro-female be definitionally anti-male? That doesn’t follow. Young women are ultimately hurt by this irrational feminist agenda. *Assuming a feminist agenda of doing away with male sports, it would be a perfectly rational one, if nefarious. * Girls are unwittingly pushed into higher risks of injury and hormonal-changing drugs. What? I mean . . . What? Does this sentence have anything to do with anything that came before it?

It just reinforces to me that dear old Phyllis has the intellect of the orange juice she used to hawk. There might be an argument to be made here, but clearly she’s not the one to make it. I assume she didn’t take logic in college . . . probably too busy chasing the quarterback, like the good conservative she is.

Excuse me while I roll my eyes:

I think this is fucking stupid!

They are sports. If women want to wrestle let them wrestle. But don’t take away a sport just because it is male based. I hate wrestling but not to the point to see it abolished.

Are we all becoming Nazis here.

Fuck this I’m moving to Canada.

Aaaaand we’ve got “Nazi” in Post No. 9!! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that’s just nine short posts to the inevitable Nazi reference! Who had post 9 in the pool? Come forward and collect your prize!

I had twelve posts, but I’m annexing the betting pool, which has historically always been a part of my bank account.

DDH: They are sports. If women want to wrestle let them wrestle. But don’t take away a sport just because it is male based. I hate wrestling but not to the point to see it abolished.

Nobody’s actually trying to abolish wrestling, Ms. Schlafly’s contorted rhetoric notwithstanding. The danger to wrestling, such as it is, arises from the facts that

  1. many colleges and universities are trying to equalize men’s/women’s athletics spending across the board as a precautionary measure against Title IX lawsuits, even though such across-the-board equalizing is not the only way that they can comply with Title IX; and

  2. if a college wants to keep a big, expensive men’s sports team that has no comparable equivalent in women’s sports (i.e., football, mostly) while equalizing men’s and women’s athletics spending, then it’s gotta cut some smaller and less expensive men’s teams.

I think this is a pity, even if I don’t give a rat’s ass about what Ms. Schlafly perceives as the need to protect so-called “male culture” from the so-called “feminist agenda”. However, I didn’t much care for the typical pre-Title IX solution of cheaping out only on the women’s teams, either. It will take a while for colleges fully to realize that co-education really means that athletics are (almost) twice as expensive.

Conclusive evidence that wrestling should have been banned forty years ago.

Hey I had post nine and figured I’d rig the pole  (oops did I say that out loud :smack: )

I’m just saying, for the land of opportunity and freedom we sure are very restictive on whats PC and gender acceptable.

I could easily see myself in a different country in a few years.

DDH: I’m just saying, for the land of opportunity and freedom we sure are very restictive on whats PC and gender acceptable.

And you’re basing this opinion on Phyllis Schlafly’s unsupported allegations that “feminists” are trying to abolish “sports in which men excel, such as wrestling”? Mmm-hmmm.

I could easily see myself in a different country in a few years.

Well, don’t let the border hit you in the ass on the way out.

Isn’t having culture entirely against being male? I thought the whole problem was that we HAD no culture.

burps, farts, and scratches himself

Kimstu, and others, in the column Phyllis Schlafly describes a situation where the number of female participants in sports must be proportional to their numbers in the student population, not proportional spending.

There are holes in her argument that you could drive a truck through sideways, but I thought we should get that point clear at least.

But not nearly as restrictive as pre Title IX…that is, if you count women.

You do count women, don’t you?

This thread is hilarious. Is Shlalafly a humorist?

Cheerleaders don’t chase quarterbacks?

Manly sports (apparently) produce good conservatives?

Is this really Dave Barry?

Cite?

Pretty please?
