Are helmets required for motorcycle riders in California?

I was in California for the first time in many years. This was in Imperial and San Diego counties. Every motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet. Is this required only on freeways or is it required on every public street? Is the lane splitting still allowed?

Don’t know about the lane splitting. But you have to wear a motorcycle helmet no matter where you ride and no matter your age.

IIRC from my MSF class, California is one of the few (only?) states that allows lane splitting.

Lane splitting is not prohibited in California

Helmets are required in California, even for outlaw bikers. You will get a ticket for not wearing one.

Lane splitting is allowed in California provided you do it safely. Whatever that means.
