Are human/primate noses designed to be picked?

Serious question. It seems to me that the nose is just the right size for a pick. Would this help prevent diseases? Clear the nostrils in a time before cleanixs? What are the evolutionary advantageous of being able to pick your nose?

Keep bees from infecting your brain when they fly up the nostril?

Certainly I’ve seen apes pick their noses. But it takes more than a nostril. It takes a hand. Horses have way big nostrils, but those hooves just limit the ability of a good pick.

Perhaps primates developed hands for the sole purpose of picking their noses. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmmm, biomechanics…

Any minute now, Hydrocortisone will be along to assure us that human ears were designed to be wet-willied.

Humans and other primates have the ability to insert their digits in nearly every orifice, but they don’t have the flexibility to lick between their legs.

Maybe it’s a social adaptation.

What are the evolutionary advantages of dogs being able to lick their balls?

We can’t lick our own balls, so we need others to do it for us. This strengthens the social bond between individuals.

Ummm… so, like,… dogs can lick their own balls, so their social evolution is quite different than that of primates.

If dogs could pick their noses, they would rule the world, or, they would get seriously ill from all the bacteria they introduced to their nasal passages that were picked up just walking around, sniff, sniff, sniffing.

Wait a minute…

Dogs must inhale just as much junk as they step in… they sniff nearly every bit of ground they walk on… why don’t they need to pick their noses?

A-HA! Nose-picking is not a survival ability! We aren’t able to pick our noses because we need to… we can pick our noses, therefore, we do.

I sure hope so cuz I was picking mine when I opened this thread.

Q: Why do gorillas have big nostrils?
A: Big fingers.

Oh, yeah…

The development of Kleenexes (sic) had nothing whatsoever to do with clearing the nostrils. They were invented solely for the purpose of keeping boogers off of every other surface within wiping or flicking distance.

Noses - or fingers, for that matter- weren’t “designed”.

Evolution has nothing to do with design. Sometimes things work out conveniently, and represent an advantage.

If your question were “Are human nostrils a convenient size to be picked by human fingers?”, my answer would be “Yes.” YMMV

The existence of pickable noses, in conjunction with dextrous fingers and opposable thumbs, is proof of intelligent design.

In short God wants us to pick our noses. He would also rather we used the Kleenexes, but that last point is a matter for Free Will.
