Thanks - makes much more sense now.
Ariana Grande once pulled a stupid stunt so now Katy Perry shouldn’t talk about loving other people or something. Don’t ask me how the conservative mind works.
If the internet, and by extension the world it vicariously represents, has ‘an absolute you know underbelly mob pit of horribleness’, do you want that lot uniting ?
Seriously ?
Plus it is odd to call for fan bases to unite when she has a playful type of petty feud going on at the moment with Miss Taylor Swift.
Well, trouble with that is that they are given no option to take or decline that ‘protection’; and in many cases openly declining it is considered treason in various jurisdictions. It is the same as saying those who criticize the War on Drugs benefit from the numerous benefits the War provides; maybe so, but the War’s not gonna go away no matter what ordinary people want.
Anyway, from those I’ve looked at, pacifists, from Quakers to Old Brethren, have been utterly sincere in their beliefs and frequently decline military ‘protection’.
Anyway, I won’t criticize her, nor care what she thinks; it is an incredibly hard life for attractive young women performing now, because whether they choose it or not, they are intensely sexualized by media and assorted loonies, and I would hate to read her ‘fan-mail’ or comments online.
Of course, no-one would give a damn about her views if she wasn’t attractive.
Mocking Perry (or any celebrity) for having bodyguards or security while talking about the need to love and respect others is pretty lame. Even if terrorism was no longer a thing, the fact would remain that any given celebrity is far more likely to be stalked or targeted for crime than an average person due to crazed fans, obsessed weirdos, wealth or value as a kidnapping target.
Wow, this is much more time spent defending Katy Perry than I would have guessed when I woke up this morning.
I think they fall under the being put under a microscope by trolls umbrella.
A pop star is asked on a radio show to make some comment about an act of horrific terror that occurred at another pop star’s concert.
She responds a bit less than profoundly, essentially saying “I feel devastated. And you know while sometimes people behave badly to each other on social media I hope that we can all unite and support each other in the wake of a tragic event like this, no matter who we are or where we live or what our creed or politics.”
That’s something horrible for a pop star to say off the cuff? She’s not a world leader giving a prepared statement, just a pop star being interviewed. Profound? Articulate? Not particularly. But benign enough.
But social media trolls be social media trolls, even in, maybe especially in, the wake of tragic events.
Now while her comment was benign enough, using this time to attack Grande, to be such an offensive idiot as to call the audience demographic that most follows these pop stars (and thus were those attacked, killed, and injured in the blast) names and to imply that they are/were people who hate-America … that’s inexcusable.
And Evan Drake? Indeed what she said does extend to society as a whole. There are people in the world like some who post here like absolute despicable scum, who interact with each other in ugly ways, especially when cloaked with anonymity, including over petty things, and yes, seriously yes, in the wake of tragic events it is a reasonable to hope that people can, for a moment, put aside petty ugly bickering, put it into perspective, and that those who feel devastated (quite possibly a few teens and younger who most closely follow and are the most intense fans of these pop stars, who realize that this could have been anyone of them similarly attacked) can unite in support of each other.
Seriously.
That’s exactly what I read, Dseid. I can’t see how anyone could read that as some sort of liberal agenda.
She just said we should put aside our petty bickering in the face of this tragedy. And what did the Blaze and whoever they are quoting do? Make some sort of petty bickering out of it.
She’s upset, and she wants people to be nice to each other. Does being conservative mean you should be happy and be mean to everyone else while they are going through this?
I find it unlikely that anyone of importance cares what Katy Perry thinks of this issue. Do you find anyone on this message board using words from a celebrity as part of their argument? If I countered one of your claims with “Well, Katy Perry says differently” would you find that a compelling argument?
OK, so a pop star issued some platitudes. What did the radio host think she was gonna do, show up in a burqa and start chanting “Death to the infidels”?
What happens on social media is apparently important to her, so that’s what she talked about. “Let’s all come together on Twitter and be nice” isn’t particularly profound, but nobody in their right mind expected it to be.
Regards,
Shodan
Many people are influenced by what Katy Perry thinks. And people “of importance” are influenced by what many people think.
So it’s not like “anyone of importance” directly thinks “well we have to take Katy Perry’s view into account before deciding this”. But Katy Perry has an influence on society, and society influences people of importance.
Nah, I don’t want neo-nazis and porn-fanatics and libertarians and ultra-leftists to come together.
And I disagree. SOME people might be influenced by what Katy Perry thinks. But I don’t think teenage girls are a strong voting bloc in local and national elections.
They are the Future Mothers of the Nation !
I’m not all that familiar with Katy Perry specifically, and wasn’t aware that her fan base consists of teen-age girls. But even if that’s the case, it wouldn’t change things much. Teen-age girls grow up. Some will change to one degree or another but influences last and it’s a mistake to discount the influence on teen-age girls just because at this time they are not a strong voting bloc.
Ok man, whatever. You are not even that familiar with Katy Perry yet you think she will have an influence on grown-up teenage girls in the future to such a degree that it will affect local and national elections. Good luck with that.
Elections? The conversation in this thread has not been about elections. Perhaps you’re confused with another thread.
The original statement I was responding to (yours, actually, now that I look back) was “Also, who cares what Katy Perry says about anything?” Nothing about elections. And my response was and is that people like Katy Perry have outsize influences on society, and thus impact even people who personally have little regard for their statements.
Could ultimately influence elections too, as any societal force might. But it’s a mistake to focus on that, and I wasn’t.
If anything I thought it was weird she implied that her fanbase might not care as much about the event because it happened at an Ariana Grande concert. But the low end of her demographic is around 8 so it might not be a bad thing to remind them.
I’m guessing some right wing outlets are still a little salty about her comments during the election. IIRC she was one of those who should have emigrated to Canada by now.
Ok, impact them how then?
It’s hard to conjure up the myriad ways. Are you really disagreeing with the general idea that societal attitudes impact individual people?
Seriously the dudes and dudettes who are such losers as to get all pantywaisted because a pop star was not “we must hunt them down and extract revenge” enough for them, and/or had kneejerk knives out responses to the word “borders” damn whatever context, need to get some kind of lives, and gain some kind of perspective.
This is a freakin’ pop star ad libbing a platitude on a radio interview, maybe not clearly thought through, that at worst had some John Lennon “Imagine” track playing somewhere in the back of her head.
22 people, including children, died, 59 wounded. It has, as intended, succeeded scaring pre-teens, teens, and parents, across the Western world, that venues that children congregate at are terror targets. There is enough reason to believe that other large scale “soft target” terror attacks are planned to put the country at critical alert.
And analyzing the adequacy and clarity of a pop star’s ad lib response on a radio interview is what matters?
Freakin’ pathetic.
Yeah, pop stars can get youth involved in politics. Yeah, celebrities have soapboxes to promote causes. Celebrities can leverage that soapbox into political careers, even into the Presidency, because people will pay attention to them. Whether it’s Clint Eastwood, Chachi, or Katie Perry, celebrities have potential to influence those who admire them. And analyzing every statement they make is still idiotic to do.
