What does the world see in this talentless tramp? Seriously? She’s not really that good looking and her lyrics make Britney Spears look like the greatest lyricist ever. My daughter downloaded her CD the other day and was listening to it in the basement when I happened to walk in. The song was “Peacock” and here is a sampling of the stellar lyrical craftsmanship I was exposed to (Katy Perry - Peacock - Directlyrics)
All of her songs are just as horrible. I had heard that her parents pretty much disowned her when she started this new career and I never understood why but after hearing these songs I can see how they would be horrified by her behavior. I seriously don’t know how she can sing these songs with a straight face they are so ridiculous. She comes across as a cock crazy slut. Of course, I’m always down for a cock crazy slut but yikes she is talentless.
Is it just her looks that makes her a star or what?
I don’t know if she was disowned, but I remember hearing somewhere that she used to do gospel music and her parents were pastors or whatever. When that wasn’t quite paying the bills, she must’ve decided to reinvent herself and found the formula for suck-ce$$. I can see how such a drastic change might have bothered such conservative parents who raised her with the hope of her becoming a paragon of gospel music.
I think she’s the worst of the current crop of pop tarts by far. I’m not even really sure what it is about her that I find so loathsome – she certainly hasn’t got a monopoly on stupid lyrics, and I’d say she’s a better singer than some of her peers – but I can’t stand her.
What are you all talking about? Her songs are fun, catchy, and clever. “Last Friday Night” is awesome. She also knows the marketing savvy of making a good video to help nurture a hit.
For me, it may be that she gives the impression of actually being much smarter than the 13 year olds for whom she’s writing her music (unlike, say, Britney Spears; who, in a game of checkers, couldn’t beat your cat). So she comes across as all the more cynically manipulative.
Please do not reprint the lyrics to a song in (almost, in this case) their entirety. The lyrics to “Peacock” are protected by copyright law and reprinting 80% of them is far beyond fair use.
Incidentally, while her parents apparently aren’t thrilled with the sex aspect of her presentation, the family still gets along fine and gets together for holidays and stuff. It is trivially easy to find pictures of Ms. Perry and her husband smiling and happy in photos with Perry’s (well, her real name is Hudson) parents. All parties involved have repeatedly denied that they are estranged.
Last Friday Night.
Someone mentioned Britney Spears. I actually hadn’t her version of Hold it Against Me (I’ve been living in a cave) until after I stumbled pn this cover. I loved the cover. But after I heard the original, I wondered how this song ever became popular?
Haha I think it’s kind of funny that she would put out a light pop song with the lyrics “I want to see your cock cock…”
I’m definitely not a fan of her music, but I do find her very easy on the eyes. I don’t see much difference between her and any of the other “pop tarts,” as people have labeled them. At least she’s not 16 like a lot of them were when they started out. Hell, Katy Perry is older than I am.
I think it’s a bit much to call her a slut and a tramp because she wears sexy stage outfits and and has tongue in cheek sexual lyrics. Katy Perry is married, and while I don’t really follow celebrity gossip, I don’t recall ever seeing or hearing anything about outrageous behavior from her.
Would you have a problem with sexual lyrics if they came from a more talented artist? Liz Phair has a song called “Hot White Cum,” in which she calls the eponymous substance the fountain of youth. I’ve always thought it was a catchy little song. Frankly, I think the song is down right romantic.
Liz Phair link- Not Safe for Work lyrics, but no naughty pictures.
If you want to rail against the crappy quality of this type of pop music, well, I would have to agree with you. But I see no reason why Katy Perry should be singled from the many thousands of entertainers who figured out that sex sells.
God help me, I deliberately watched the “Last Friday Night” video because I’d heard that two cast members from Glee appeared in it. (I’ve done things I’m not proud of for Glee, such as actually watching Glee.) Less than a minute into the actual song I had to turn the sound off. Maybe it improves a lot after the first 45 seconds or so, but the beginning was terrible.
The video itself struck me as a botched execution of a funny concept, although the blame for that presumably lies with the director and not Katy Perry herself.
That’s part of it, but of course Katy Perry is hardly alone in that regard either. I can’t really explain it, I just hate her whole persona. But it certainly doesn’t help that Katy Perry seems to have chosen this persona for herself while Britney Spears seemed barely aware of what she was doing.
When Katy appeared on Saturday Night Live it sounded as though she was actually singing on stage. The only song of hers I don’t like is E.T. and that’s mainly because Kayne West has a big part in it. Kayne West sounds like he’s whining rather than singing.
She has some garbage music (“E.T.” should just go away. The song, that is. I have no problems with the Alien) and much of her stuff I like when I first hear it but then get very tired of it very quickly because it is over played (“Firework”, I’m looking at you!), and if I had teenage kids I would be concerned if I heard them singing some of her lyrics but she has real talent and some good songs. “Waking up in Vegas” for example. Also “Last Friday Night” is fun and catchy. But different strokes and all that.
It’s funny, until I started writing this post, I didn’t realize that she is really just a beginner with two pop albums (three total). It seems like she has been around forever.
