Are Kiwis the Canadians of the Southern Hemisphere?

Incidentally, our right-wing conservatives speaking against left-wing policies don’t speak with disdain about an equivalent New Zealand system or accuse Kiwis as getting a free ride off our prosperity.

These are things I’ve heard of about the health care debate and prescription drug prices in the US. etc.

Just as an aside, while Pakeha was used for a long time in New Zealand, and some places institutions may still use (not sure of the last census) but many people (myself included) don’t really like the term. Its certainly falling out of favour, if not fallen out already.

If asked, I describe myself as a New Zealander - with no modifier at all (which if I recall was one of the options in the last census I participated in)

Sorry missed the edit window - I just checked, and it seems the term “Pakeha” is no where near as close to going out of style as I thought (unfortunately)

New Zealander is still my preferred ethnicity if asked though, and I will not self identify as a Pakeha.

This certainly raised questions with me when I had to have my race displayed on my Singapore Identity Card. As “New Zealander” is not a race…so what to put. Thinking on it now I should have asked if I could have Pakeha (would at least have been better than caucasian or european) - stupid of me. I don’t think they would let me have New Zealander.

I should go and see if I can get it changed…

Is Kiwi derogatory? Can I call a New Zealander a Kiwi without him getting offended in anyway?
I would love to visit both those countries by the way. It’s a shame that travel to them is so expensive.

No. Yes. But call him or her an Aussie, and you’re in deep kiwi droppings.

Not in the slightest - and neither is Pakeha by the way.

The accepted meaning these days of the word is New Zealander of European descent…there were other definitions, like foreigner, outsider, there was one that was derogatory…but not being proficient in the Maori langauage I dunno too much about that.

I just don’t really like to be defined by the time - I am my nationality, not the colour of my skin.

It’s not just the expense, it’s also the strapping-yourself-into-a-metal-tube-for-fourteen-frickin’-hours-until-your-ass-feels-like-it’s-gonna-fall-off bit as well.

I can’t say that I really saw either country - just Auckland and Rotarua in NZ and Sydney in Australia - but I immensely enjoyed both, and recommend them to any Northern Hemispheroids who can make the trip.

Incidently, I knew when I started this thread that I was dealing in stereotypes, that don’t hold for all members of a group. But I am curious in y’all’s stereotypes regarding each other.

Stereotype of new Zealanders among my friends - I’ve been doing a quick ask around since this thread started . They are universally regarded as very friendly and a great country. All see them as our closest mates. No feeling of superiority. Even more - we like beating them in sport. The only rivals we like beating even more are the Brits in test cricket.

Just be careful about using the word “Pakeha” to describe European New Zealanders. Some of them (such as myself) find it offensive, as has been mentioned.

There’s actually not a lot of differences between Australia & NZ (jokes about sheep and sports aside), but I do find that Australians are sometimes a bit more laid back about things (especially in Queensland) than NZers.
