Are there any better methods for artificially producing randomness?
Producing bits from radioactive decay is a popular method in cryptographic devices.
Possibly the most random thing we observe in the universe is the microwave background from the Big Bang. Not only is it thermal, which is extraordinarily random to begin with, but in theory the background radiation reaching us now at the speed of light from the edge of the observable universe is something we have never causually interacted with before.
I have heard of people using the final three digits of the total amount bet at a particular racetrack as a random number.
I think lottery draws are not actually random, how else could they avoid the numbers I’ve chosen for so many years?
random.org is based on atmospheric noise, which is (as far as we know) truly random.
the lottery methods are random in a method that is totally transparent and easily verified. balls are all guarded and verified for being equal. there rest of the mechanism is easily checked.
so other methods might be more random but very hard to test against tampering if there was something big at stake.
Lottery tampering happens as well.
yes though the design of the system is that it can be easily checked by weighing the balls.
Then you bribe the person weighing the balls. ![]()
You usually have to pay extra for that sort of thing, anyway.
Well if you’re going to be winning the lottery anyway…
But you might run into a ball-weigher who yells “Keep your stinkin’ hands off my balls!”
(Were I an official ball-weigher, it would depend on who was trying to get their hands on my balls.)
(what happened to the font sizing?)
I think that, whether or not it is truly random, it looks fair.
