I’ve always thought that if I were ever to become a manager, or otherwise a superordinate of some sort, I don’t want my subordinates to talk up to me, or be afraid of disagreeing with me. I want to be called by my first name. I want them to almost see me as an equal (I say “almost” because there are obvious disadvantages to them seeing you as an equal, but let’s not get into that).
That’s not the weird part. Let’s turn the tables the other way, and suppose that I were a subordinate and had a boss or manager. I would totally acknowledge the power distance between us and refer to him or her with a title before his or her name. When I go to Asia or watch movies and shows from there, I find their bows of respect very charming and endearing. I would love to be a service person and refer to people as Sirs and Ma’ams while bowing to them.
Does this make sense? Who else here shares these same attitudes?
Psych experts/students, what does this say about me?
