Are No-Fault Divorce Laws Next on Maga's List?

I would’ve guessed gay marriage would be the next target of the American Taliban after overturning Roe v Wade, but no, the mysogyny is stronger than homophobia apparently.

Ben Carson has recently declared support for anti-no fault divorce measures.

I just can’t anymore. I am sick of these freaking maniacs trying to destroy all the progress that we progressive types have made. Yeah, no kid wants his or her folks to divorce, but you know what? SOME PEOPLE JUST SHOULDN’T BE TOGETHER.

I was really blindsided by stumbling over this latest putch-plan. I had no idea maga minions would target divorce laws. But I guess if a woman has no right to terminate an unviable pregnancy, then she shouldn’t be able to leave a soul-crushing marriage either.

And yes, I realize men also instigate divorces, no-fault or not. But women do it more often.

Yet one more step in Freedom of Religion means everyone must be a Fundamentalist Christian.

I’m gonna say this ain’t happening as rich old white men are very happy with the ability to stay a rich when they divorce their wife and shack up with their secretary.

So while they will let the evangelical right kick up a fuss about this, they aren’t going to actually do anything

Like most of these restrictions, rich white guys think they’ll be able to get around them and do what they want. They’re probably right.

Yeah, and I thought the same thing about the overturn threat against Roe v Wade. Rich white guys are very happy to be able to quietly terminate a secretary’s oopsie. And look what happened.

Old rich white men lost control of the Republican Party several years ago.

All but one.

He’s not actually rich.

Since Republicans get divorced as often as Democrats, and the only two divorced presidents were Republicans, they would be outright hypocrites if they went after no-fault divorce. So of course they will.

Back to the OP, probably. I’m a little surprised at the surprise. If you’ve been paying attention, many evangelicals and conservative Catholics oppose:
Abortion
Birth control of any kind
IVF
Divorce
Female Equality
Sex education

And have opposed these things for many, many years. It isn’t new. What’s new is the degree to which the conservative movement has become beholden to them. For a long time, they got lip service in exchange for their votes. Now they’re getting what they demand in exchange for their votes, I’m guessing because it’s necessary to motivate them.

I married into a family with a lot of conservative Catholics (my wife is NOT one), and they’ve been ranting about these things for as long as I’ve known them, which is 30+ years.

All IMO

They’re already talking in places about closing roads to people who are driving to get an abortion, so nothing surprises me.

So why aren’t sane people freaking out more about this stuff???

Same people are freaking out. My wife had a meltdown last night over the prospect of a Trump win. Other people are just getting resigned to the fact that there is a much greater number of deplorable people in this country than previously imagined, and have given up hope.

“Freaking out” isn’t generally what sane people do. Now, pointing out that this is the agenda of the right (which will lose them independents as draconian abortion laws do) and keeping the message alive is what a sane person should do.

Exhaustion.

… which is part of the plan.

@Two_Many_Cats2, hang in there. It’s an endurance contest until November.

You see, if good upstanding Christian men can’t just get a divorce whenever, they won’t be able to succumb to the temptation of sweet sweet gay sex, which, as they have established, is so awesome and feels so good that everyone would be doing it all the time if it were permitted.

It’s a win-win!

I didn’t mean freaking out as in panicking, I meant (and I can’t believe I’m quoting Bob Dole here) “Where’s the outrage?”

Because I don’t hear a lot of chatter about what the right wing is up to among sane people. You’d think something like a movement towards repealing no-fault divorce laws would be splattered across mainstream media, but it isn’t.

The Ben Carson story I linked to is a month old. I’m just hearing about this now. OldOlds is surprised by my shock because the conservatives have been pushing about this for years, but when I talk to the people around me, all I get is a blank eyed shrug. “I haven’t been following politics,” they mutter, as if this is the plot to some TV show that’s about to be cancelled. That attitude is not going to save democracy in November.

I think there are a lot of conservative women who really are freaking out about this stuff, but they are doing so quietly, until they speak out with their vote, as they did in many states following the end of Roe v. Wade. This might be what conservative men want to do, but they’re not getting votes that way, and they are making themselves an easy target in November.

The results of such laws would be disastrous for women of course. But most women know this.

It really makes me think there’s no limit to how much they will try to put women in their place. If they get away with this, next comes our right to vote. I’m not sure what’s left.

ETA: I just read about it in Vox. It’s in the news.

Gotcha. In that case yeah, this is both ridiculous (rolling back rights to ancient history) and should be something Dems can campaign on this year if it gets much actual support from Pubbies.
