Most professional services companies (law firms, consulting firms, financial services, etc) hire people who ‘look’ professional. You don’t have to be a beauty queen/king(judging by the girls at my firm) but you can’t be a mutant either. Most people look a lot more attractive when they are dressed up with a suit and a decent haircut.

Attractive people get attention from their peers. Attention builds confidence. Confidence in oneself is important for success in business. Success in business means more money and affluence.

You don’t have to be smart to be successful. The people at professional firms I meet, by way of anecdote, who are successful are often attractive and dynamic, but not necessarily smart.
