Are Republicans Tiring Of Wars On “Wokeness”?

Woke rodeo bull reacts like typical snowflake to “I’m Proud to be an American”

(Is it heartless of me to find that funny? Yes: I would have enjoyed it even more if he’d had a chimp dressed as Roy Rogers riding on his back)

It’s Urban Dictionary. It’s full of people trying to prove how edgy they are by using slang that’s so slang that nobody actually uses it.

Forget it Jake; it’s UD-town. :grin:

“Rizz” is just short for “charisma”.

“My bard has a rizz of 20! I’ll try seduction on that gelatinous cube!”

Addressing the OP, I think the issue is whereas “wokeness” may have started off as loony extremism of the Social Justice Warrior faction, it has now morphed into meaning things like “Don’t be racist.” and “Maybe women should get equal pay for equal work.” So early on, yeah it was easy to fight wokeness when being woke was screaming at the top of your lungs during a city council meeting because ‘you’re not heard’ or telling people everyone needs to date people out of their racial group otherwise you’re worse than Hitler. But now its hard to fight being woke when a lot of the time it means don’t be an asshole to people that are not old white straight men.

Ah, to be old enough to remember when “woke” or “politically correct” or “liberal” meant something. And usually something entirely unlike what is being accused of being that these days.

But yeah, “woke” is now just whatever they don’t like. And if everything is “woke” then nothing is and it gets hard to fight nothing.

One example, the Rs are all about blaming the shortfall in Armed Forces recruiting to the rise of a “woke military”. Not that…
… there’s weariness after 2 decades of wars burdening only the tiny number in service while the rest of us were told to keep buying and partying;
… not that the veterans of those 20+ years point out inferior people care and inferior veteran services once you are out;
… not that we have raised a generation of screen potatoes who can’t even begin to qual for the physical;
… not that we are at historically LOW unemployment and a “high-speed low-drag” prospect (or a freshly experienced short-timer highly trained at taxpayer cost) can make more money out on the free market.
No.
It’s got to be because you allow TG members and because women can go to Ranger School and OMG you have DEI offices and that’s scaring away the good strong manly highly motivated All-American Boys who’d otherwise be knocking the doors down to sign up. :roll_eyes:

Back in 1998, a USAF officer I worked with claimed that Clinton’s draft-dodging was the cause of the recruiting shortfall, not the booming economy. I never understood how that was supposed to work.

That’s not how “woke” started.

True. But many people’s first real exposure to wokeness is as I described.

“Woke” has always meant the same thing: Being aware of social injustice. Opposing woke means the same thing it always has: Wanting people to be unaware of social injustice. Which is why the Social Injustice Warriors are opposed to woke.

I think it’s more that - with every word such as “political correctness” or “woke,” it’s always a motte-and-bailey argument. Supporters and detractors alike intend it to mean the broadest meaning when convenient, but also the narrowest interpretation when convenient. That way, the term always means only good and never bad (or conversely, only bad and never good) as the speaker wants. It’s a dodge tactic.

And in any case, by now the common-usage connotation has been well and thoroughly turned into something else by the political propagandists. Reiterating that everyone’s getting it wrong as a result of deliberate distortion is a gallant effort but likely ineffective at “saving” the word.

That’s a great formulation. Thank you.

Although I’d tweak it slightly to say

Woke” has always meant the same thing: Being aware of social injustice. Opposing woke means the same thing it always has: Wanting people to be unaware of, or actively in favor of, social injustice. Which is why the Social Injustice Warriors are opposed to woke.

He hated having to obey Clinton as CinC so therefore of course, everyone would avoid joining rather than have to obey Clinton as CinC. The RW mindset is that of course everyone sees it their way and are just lying when we say we see things another way.

The notion of “woke” originally being awareness of not just the explicit but also the implicit baked-in injustices naturally clashes strongly with that, because how can anyone possibly see inherent injustice where THEY only see the obvious natural God-given order where everyone has their place and everyone should know their place and that cannot be an injustice, so whoever is arguing against it is trying to subvert Truth.

Of course, the opportunist leaders then grab on to that and declare that ANYTHING that anyone brings up about fairness or justice is “woke” subversion, never mind where it comes from.

In a few years, they’ll be trying to pass off their fealty to the Yellin’ Felon as an embarassing teenage emo phase that should be forgotten. Screw that – suck it up, accept the Biblical remedy for foresaking one’s proper loyalty to worship an idol, and come back to us in 2064 to plead for re-admission to polite society.

Close, but no cigar.

“When you look at the long arc of history and America’s reaction to the request for Black liberation – every time Black people try to use a phrase or coin a phrase that symbolizes our desire for liberation, it will eventually become a cuss word to white people” -Michael Harriot

https://www.naacpldf.org/woke-black-bad/

It’s perhaps this very context — Black people’s awareness of their history and their power to resist injustice — that made woke so ripe for the pernicious mutation it has now undergone. Indeed, the forced transformation of the colloquialism echoes how countless other Black ideas and intellectual contributions have been maligned.

“When people during the civil rights movement began saying ‘Black power,’ all of a sudden it became a term that people equated with communism and anti-white sentiment — and then it eventually gave birth to ‘white power,’” Harriot tells LDF. “The ‘1619 Project’ [which centers the ramifications of slavery and the contributions of Black people in American history] has become an insult. ‘Black Lives Matter’ became an ‘anti-white sentiment’ that was banned in school and spawned ‘all lives matter’ and ‘blue lives matter.’”

It being a literal four-letter word helps too.

Republicans will never tire of it until they never again see or hear a non-White person challenge their God-given supremacy.

That’s the condition.

Stop that.
This isn’t about your individual grievances.
Trump is a menace.
Instead of your foolish ideas, we must try to woo GOP members who are disaffected from the MAGAists, not abuse them!
This is more important than just you.
