Are sex differences in personality rooted in nature or nurture?

Personally, I think they are mostly natural because I read that in more gender-egalitarian countries, the behavior of men and women actually diverges more, not less. This matches up to my personal observations that in countries like India and China, despite men being considered superior to women in those societies the average person actually seems more androgynous than the average person in the West.

If sex differences were caused mostly or solely by culture, you would expect there to be hyper-masculine men and hyper-feminine women in countries with high inequality between the sexes, and more androgynous people in countries with more equality. It seems like the opposite is the case, which you would expect if sex differences are inborn given that sexual equality usually correlates to greater freedom and if the sexes have natural differences, people would be more likely to express those differences in a freer society.

I would say both. Men and women biologically have different experiences, different bodies and such which would lend themselves to differing points of view on things and thus differences in personality. Where nurture comes in is the traditional conception of women being soft and “feminine” and nurturing. Men and women in my experience are treated differently than their parents, which probably helps shape the personalities. I don’t mean one is treated better than the other, just, you don’t tend to give a boy a doll to “baby.” Now whether the nurturing nature of women is solely biological, or solely social, is separate question.

But just physical differences alone are enough to explain the gaps in personality. The differences, too, in sexual experience as well.

I’m not sure what you mean.

Are you asking what causes sexual attraction? Why some people like blond hair and other people like dark hair? Why some people like tall girls and other people like short girls? why some people like Spanish girls and other people like red hair girls? Why some people like tomgirls and other people hate tomgirls?

The likes and dislikes of sexual attraction?

If I’m not mistaken most people say it is the environmental or factors from growing up and culture why people have the likes and dislikes?

You can’t like red hair girls if NO red hair girls live in your country.

I’m talking about the differences in personality and behavior tendencies between men and women. Obviously there is a significant degree of overlap between the sexes in all societies, but it seems like sex differences are actually more pronounced in countries where men and women are more equal in status, which goes against the idea that sex differences are the result of enforced gender roles and that people are naturally androgynous.

Can you provide some specific examples of HOW sex differences seem more pronounced in countries where men and women are more equal in status, or how people in less egalitarian countries “seem more androgynous”? Because I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.
