Not to defend the article too much, but they do clarify both items: 86% of attacks are on males, 89% of fatal attacks are on males. So the 9x number comes from the number of fatalities (89:11, which admittedly is still closer to 8x), and the article does distinguish between attack and kill.
So… as much as the article got wrong, let’s not criticize them for things they actually did right.
