Are shorts appropriate for grownups of a certain age? How about cargo shorts?

You’re welcome. Even I have my limits.

Most of the posters here are not in the age demographic pictured in your link.

Rules are fashion are completely arbitrary. They’re dictated by following the crowd because you don’t want to look different.

I’d have no problem wearing a bathing suit except that it doesn’t have enough pockets. Neither does my underwear or nudity. Since I need somewhere to keep my keys, wallet, cell phone and I like to keep my hands free without the weight of a hip pack it’s not practical to wear on a hot day.

That is what I’m saying.

Generally speaking, if you don’t like the way I look, that’s your problem, not mine.

Why is it a weird question? I was curious about the SDMB zeitgeist as to the wearing of shorts among older folks. Most seem to be of the same mind with me (and you). A couple do prefer long pants, such as @pulykamell , which is of course perfectly fine.

Now what about pajama bottoms in public?

Also, fashions are quite regional, and non-Amrican fashions are different. When I lived in Hungary (as I alluded to before), I stuck out like a sore thumb when I wore shorts. I wanted to blend in, so I got used to it wearing pants out to the point that I prefer it. There are some friends I have whom I have never seen in a tee shirt, much less shorts, as that’s what they’re used to in that culture (one I’m particularly thinking of is a guy from Naples who came to the US in the 80s – it’s possible I’ve seen him in a polo once, but button-down shirt and pants is his everyday wear.)

Ergo “selfish” and “egotistical”.

I’ve never liked how shorts look on men. I haven’t worn shorts in years aside from the beach. My go-to is generally jeans while out and about, and I live in Atlanta which gets fairly hot (and yes, I wear jeans when it’s in the high 90s). I’m not going to be telling other men they can’t wear shorts though.

I’m 61, and wear shorts pretty much anytime it is over 70. Never imagined anyone would think it an issue. In fact, I’ve always thought it sorta odd that some guys I know seem to never wear them.

I almost always wear shorts. The coldest it gets where I live is low 40s / high 30s. I’ll still wear shorts but with hiking shoes and warm socks, and a warm top. In the summer it’s flipflops.

I often go to church this way, and I’m congregation president. It’s California — pretty relaxed here.

Wow. I had not followed @msmith537’s link the first time. Good to see inseams finally shortening after 40 years of silly excess length.

I’m going to have to get some of these.

Because the question of appropriateness of shorts is just such a non-thing. Individual quirks aside, most Americans think nothing of it. It seems no different than asking “Is it appropriate for grownups to wear yellow?”

I only ever wear jeans. Never much cared for shorts, regardless of the temperature.

Several years ago I visited Kauai. I got shit from multiple people–strangers–about not wearing shorts. Bizarre. It wasn’t even remotely hot; like low 80s and not particularly humid at the time.

There was a poster here several years ago, who would die on the hill of men wearing shorts. Absolutely not acceptable, they said.

I’m glad to see that that sentiment is not being expressed here. I like wearing shorts, I like wearing jeans, I like wearing flannel-lined jeans in the winter, I like wearing sarongs in the summer when I get up on the weekend or when I get out of the shower in the evening. You will not catch my ass wearing jeans if it’s above about 85, unless I have an event to go to (which is…never) or work requires it for the job site.

My record for wearing shorts and not feeling cold is 42. To me, 80 is very hot.

It certainly depends on if I’m exerting myself. The last time I built an igloo, I was down to a t-shirt (and jeans), no hat, in sub-freezing temperatures. Totally comfortable. On the other hand, my desk thermometer says it’s 83.5 here and I consider it only a tiny bit warm, but not uncomfortable.

A Don don’t wear shorts.

I’d consider most of those shorts too short for any guy over 19. An inch or 2 or 3 above the knee is as high as I think looks okay; any more than that and we’re in Richard Simmons/Magnum territory. But who knows, maybe if enough men wore them that short again, it’d start to appear normalized.

I remember one summer when I was in grade school, for whatever reason I decided I wouldn’t wear shorts. SO I wore jeans all summer long. Looking back at it, it still impresses me as one of the stupider things on a LONG list of stupid things I did as a kid.

I’ve still got the legs for shorter shorts, but since I wear boxers they won’t work for me. That said, I usually wear shorts outside of work when its over 70.
