Yup, they were first introduced at Schiphol Airport in the late 80’s, IIRC.
Research showed that if a guy has something to aim for, he’ll make less of a mess of the bathroom. At a couple of million travelers a year, that stuff adds up, so it makes sense.

All I have to say is that as far back as I can remember, I’ve always thought it would be cool to have a urinal in the bedroom right next to my bed. As long as you don’t fall out of bed much, it could be damned convenient.
