The only place I’d refuse would be remote parts of Alaska. Maybe the Florida Keys if I’m forced to stay in the event of a hurricane. Other than that I think I’d manage anywhere in the US, especially since I could hire a chauffeur should I end up in an area with horrible traffic.
If they are paying me that much, I must be in demand for whatever it is that they hired me for. So that means…well, I don’t know what that means, but it seems important.
My first response was “anyplace south of the Mason - Dixon Line,” for starters. Then I thought “Hell, Grand Bahama Airport is 75 miles from Boca Raton. I could use a chunk of that $6 million to hire someone to fly me to and from work everyday.”
Otherwise, $6 million insulates you from a lot of the bad in a state. Work there a couple of years, retire back to the civilized world with $10 million in the bank.
I’m in. When do I start?
I was thinking that, though I can’t imagine living anywhere in Alaska. I’m sure it’s very nice for those who like that sort of thing but it’s not for me.
I’m a professor in the humanities. Back when I was on the job market, I would gladly have moved to any region of the US for $40,000 per year. And did. Six million is a no-brainer.
Well, in the past I’ve moved to Germany and Canada and India and Thailand and Mexico and China for a lot less money. The only one I wouldn’t go back to is India. I’m not sure there’s any place in the USA that could possibly be worse than India, especially for weekend mobility that $6 million dollars gets you.
Hell, actually, for $6 million per year, I could probably be quite comfortable for a year in India, assuming a year minimum. Assuming I have most of it when done, that’s about $240,000 per year for retirement at a 4% safe withdrawal rate. Lifestyle inflation, here I come!
But since this is the USA, no, I’d have to be convinced that an area is so bad I couldn’t be comfortable for $6 million dollars per year. LGBT unfriendly? No abortion? Red state? None of that shit exists within my compound. Money excuses you from the laws that apply to the proles.
You still have to pay income taxes on the $6 million per year. This isn’t a Canadian lottery win.
$6 million is equivalent to roughly 109 years worth of my current annual wages. I’d seriously consider relocating to North Fucking Korea for that much.
I’m curious what made you choose the specific number of $6 million. But even post-tax, just one year of that would be way more than enough to retire me for life. Even under the heaviest tax codes, I’d assume I’d still walk away with $3 million net post-tax.
For $3 million in my pocket, I’d still live a year - or even a decade - in the worst, worst part of America (again, assuming it has no imminent health hazard. I can’t live in some place with high radiation.)
Nah, I’m good here in Santa Barbara.
And I would be too after a year or three of this job.
“The South”. For years I vacationed in the south, spending my money in warm beach towns. Then, two years in a row I witnessed the racist underbelly of the area.
Haven’t been back and would rather never return. Instead I vacation in the Caribbean.
Rochester, NY
I spent too damned many years there, and have far too many bad memories and associations with the place.
Besides, the Village Green bookstore long ago closed down, and The Changing Scene hasn’t rotated in ages, so what’s the point?
Isn’t the Genesee Brewery located around there?
My thought to. Or just use a car service or whatever.
I’m kinda a loner, so I’m fine staying home. The worst part of this deal is having to go into a brick and mortar building to work instead of working from home. If I had to wear a suit, the deal may be off.
I survived a year in SoCal. For $6 million I can live anywhere in the US for a year. Even Texas.
This is the big factor. At least for the continental US, you could fly almost anywhere else in the US for probably about $1000. You could fly out every weekend, for about $52K a year. So you only have to put up with the Local Bullshit during the work week, and since you’re working anyways, that covers a big portion of your days.
So I could see a lifestyle of five days working and watching TV, and then 2 days of “Woo! Vegas!” or “Woo! LA!” or “Woo! New York!”. Hell, if I’m worth $6 million a year, I could probably convince them to let me take longer trips at least once a month, too. Work one weekend, then take Friday and Monday the next weekend to travel.
Doesn’t do anything for me – I hate beer. Even if it has a certain Genesee-kwah.
And I hated when the brewery had their hop-roasting days. Made all of downtown Rochester smell like a fraternity carpet.
Hah! My gf has gone to Rochester with coworkers for some kind of event. While there she stopped at the brewery to grab me some swag. I love good beer, but Genesee Cream Ale is one of my guilty pleasures.
No love for Bakersfield, CA?
I agree $6M is too much - most people will put up with a lot for that much money. Make it $150K for more interesting responses. Or, take the cities/states mentioned already and ask if we’d move there for $150K/year.
