Hypothetical - You are offered a job making $6 million per year. It’s consistent with your skillset and you believe you would be reasonably successful at doing this job. It’s not illegal or unethical, nor does it require you to go against your values. The catch is that it’s not in your preferred city or region of the country. But hey, it’s a lot of money.
Are there any locations that would cause you to not accept the job?
But to answer the OP’s question, I probably would refuse a job in Florida for almost any amount of money (although, for say, $50M or so a year, I could put up with a lot).
Is there a minimum amount of time we must spend there? I could live anywhere in the US for $6 million if I only need to do it for one or a few years.
If it’s living there for life…ehh, I think I still could. Call me a mercenary but I could. $6 million/year is so high that it clears every bar for region livability short of Chernobyl.
In fact, even for $600,000/year, I could do it indefinitely.
For $6 million per year, I’d probably do it. For that much what I’d probably do is maintain my current lifestyle and live on just a small fraction of the salary, invest the rest, and retire after a few years.
I’ve watched videos about extremely remote villages like Jordan, Montana or Jarbidge, Nevada or Supai, Arizone. Or the even more remote little villages in Alaska.
I would have a hard time living this remotely. I would have an even harder time if I was living in a cabin all by myself several hours out in the woods.
For six million dollars a year, I might be able to handle living in a remote small village for a few years. But I probably couldn’t handle the cabin.
I live 3 minutes from E. Orange. It’s not really that bad, but there aren’t exactly any “nice” areas that you could tuck yourself away in. No big houses, they’ve all ben turned into multi family dwellings.
Violent crime wise, Newark, Trenton and Camden are all worse. Plus, it’s just a short drive to Star Tavern for some really good pizza.
And the OP said you just have to live within a reasonable commute of the place. So I would imagine you could just get a nice house in whatever fancy suburb Tony Soprano lived in (Google tells me the location used for his house was in North Caldwell), and just commute to your job in E. Orange every day.
Probably any other red state where the quality of reproductive care is abysmal and LGBTQ people aren’t allowed to exist. I would also avoid coastal areas likely to be hit hard by climate change flooding.
I like money well enough, but it doesn’t motivate me to move out of my comfort zone. My answer to “Would you do X for a million dollars?” is usually no.
