I think that is a Detroit Red Wings thing, though it would surprise me if some other teams have ripped it off. The story I heard is that it dates back to the days of the “original six” and that the eight legs of the octopuse represented the number of playoff wins needed to win the Stanley Cup title.

A friend of mine years ago was in Sienna for their Palio(?), or horse races held in the city piazza going back to medieval times. Each neighbourhood has a mascot/symbol and colours. Apparently, one group had the snail as their symbol, and the English-speaking students spending the summer there were chanting “go, go, escargot!”
