I posted in IMHO about any free VPNs for android but no responses. So now I’m wondering if there are any at all. Don’t mean this as a cross-post since I’m not asking for recommendations, just want to know if there are any available.
I searched but can only find pay sites.
(BTW, admins please delete the other OP if it’s an issue with the rules. Looks like it’ll die on the vibe anyway.)
Are you trying to use a VPN to connect to another computer on a different network (ie, connect your home computer to your work network) or are you looking for one that will, for example, bounce all your traffic off another server, usually in a different country?
If you’re just trying to connect to another network, OpenVPN works well. I have a raspberrypi sitting on my work network that does little other than act as the VPN server. I can connect to it from anywhere and get into my work network.
It should be noted that when I’m connected to my work network, any thing I do on the internet will appear to be originating from my work’s IP address. And all traffic between my device and that raspberry pi is encrypted.
Need it so I appear to be in a city served by Locast. Don’t need international. I know Nord works as well as Express VPN. Just trying to save a few bucks. Need it because can’t afford cable and not a single amplified antenna gets me more than the TBN network
Free VPNs and proxies share the same issues. They’re free because they usually monitor your traffic and sell that info. They may also keep logs and aren’t secure… That’s why they’re free. If you value your privacy and safely, use a paid service.
Also, a lot of free service IPs are blocked by website and services because of the high amount of usage they get…because they’re free!
I have never found a free VPN that was worth using. In my experience (so take with a big grain of salt) all have been miserably slow and unreliable.
Honestly paid VPNs aren’t all that pricey and you can find some good deals. IIRC I got three years of Nord VPN for $20 on a promotion they had some time back.
As noted above, the software (like OpenVPN) is free, and some services that use that software are also free, like ProtonVPN. And/or you could pay the couple of bucks per month. Always good to support free software.
Any “proxies” that monitor your traffic and sell that info are transparent scams, of course, not “free VPN”.
Also, consider the nature of a free VPN.
If you are using a browser based plugin (like, say, hola), you need to understand what is happening, Yes, you can then use someone else’s IP address and watch a video that may be restricted from your geographical area - neat!, free sports!. But by using such a service, you are basically also allowing anyone else to use YOUR ip adress as THEIR gateway.
If they decide to download child pron, law enforcement would be looking at YOUR ip address. Its a two way thing - that’s why its free. Sharing is caring and all that - you get a way to get an ip address somewhere else, but you also allow others to use yours for the same reason.
