Are there any great singers these days?

Miley Cyrus has already been mentioned. I don’t much care for the music she makes but her voice is astonishing.

Renée Elise Goldsberry

Cyndy Lauper singing ‘At Last’ sends chills down my spine.

I listen to music channels on cable tv and hear occasional standards and am surprised to see a singer like Don Henley . Or Rod Stewart (though if he’s a ‘great singer’, it’s debatable.)

At Christmas, I love to hear ‘O Holy Night’ by Celine Dion or Michael Crawford. The way each of them can hit that last high note is breathtaking.

Here’s Rolling Stone’s list of the top 200 singers of all time:

200 Best Singers of All Time – Rolling Stone

That’s probably a great place to get an idea of excellent singers, past and present.

Nat King Cole’s version is my favorite

Some other names to toss out:

Kimbra
Caroline Polacheck
Marina Diamandis
Imogen Heap
Bat For Lashes
Serj Tankian
Mike Patton

Same.

Not exactly “these days”, but Amy Winehouse was mighty.

Here to add Norah Jones.

Aimee Mann belongs on the list.

Yeah, I was going to suggest her. I’d add Jane Monheit and Diana Krall for jazz singers. For a terrific blues singer, try Ruby Wilson, who was known as the Queen of Beale Street.

Is there a special trick to make youtube videos always embed properly?

Yes, there is.

Faith No More’s Mike Patton?

He’s certainly versatile … I don’t think I’ve head his material since his Faith No More days (assuming the same singer as you meant). I’ll have to look him up.

To be honest, i dislike that genre of music so much that it’s hard for me to even notice whether they had great voices. Whereas i was instantly struck by the power of Adele’s voice.

One of my faves. Our band does 2 covers of her songs (which I believe are covers.)

Wow! Good pipes. Always a sucker for a strong alto.

His live duet with Myles Kennedy on that song is better. So I’ll mention Myles Kennedy. Great singer who can bounce between vocal styles without hesitation. If you listen to him in Alter Bridge and then with Slash you would never think it’s the same guy.

This is a place where I think the current use of autotune hurts certain artists because their true vocal skills get hidden in the effort to make everything sound perfect.

I’ve recently become a fan of Orville Peck. Very country-ish and just deep almost haunting voice.

Cécile McLorin Salvant is the best jazz singer alive, IMO. Here she is singing I Didn’t Know What Time It Was: https://youtu.be/G99FfalLFWQ?si=LbEHfzDDg04_s_9v

So many names here that I don’t recognize at all, some I recognize but couldn’t match to a voice. And I admit, I really like the standards of the 40s and 50s, so that may color my perception.

I loved the duets of Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga as well as some of her solo stuff. I will be sampling some of the folks listed here. Obviously by limiting my listening to the times I drive minimizes what I’m exposed to. I promise it’s not a case of “kids these days…” It seems I’m missing out on some good stuff.
