Are there any living US WWI veterans left alive?

Did you serve in the European or Pacific Theater, David? My grandfather fought the Japanese all across the Pacific, including Papau New Guinea. Were he still alive, he’d be 100 years old next year.

Whoever it is, he has the medal and red ribbon of the Legion d’Honneur. All surviving WW1 vets of all Allied countries were awarded France’s highest honor as of the 80th anniversary of Armistice Day, by order of President Chirac. My grandfather was fortunate enough to receive his in a ceremony at his nursing home that could only be called surreal - the Consul General, a fine lady, came from Washington the Tricouleur, a fine champagne, and played a recording of La Marseillaise while we all stood at attention. The medal itself is still engraved with the year Napoleon created the Ordre, XX (in the French Revolutionary calendar).

It would certainly be nice for the WW2 vets to get it too. Hang in there, David.

A couple of years ago, someone asked this and a cite was produced that showed the number of people getting Vet Benefits from each war. The most amazing thing was that there was one mother of a WWI KIA still alive and receiving benefits.

According to news reports, I’m gaining ground at the rate of 1500/day.

I remember that. Considering that the youngest possible WW1 vets are centarians, mama had to have been a contender for World’s Oldest Human Being.

Can anybody find that site/cite again? I’m curious as to whether she’s still with us.
