In my town (Richmond, VA), about a hundred pick-up trucks decked out with Confederate flags have been parading up and down the main drag all day. They were also out last weekend. I suspect they’ll be out again tomorrow.
I’m so sick of them. I wish they could be gone with the wind.
I didn’t see anything like a parade (Western PA) but I’ve probably seen more of the flags in the last week than in the last 5 years combined. At the Bike Night I attended Wednesday it was reaching the level of silly - even sillier than I expected. Folks I’ve known for 20 years who never had one in any form now have the patch, the t-shirt, the friggin gas cap even. Dumb. And like all the “Support Our Troops” and 9/11 stuff, soon to fade away.
I’m sure there are Confederate [Battle] Flag supporters in California somewhere, but I have to say that it is nice living in a place where the Civil War isn’t really part of local history. It’s true that there was some participation by CA in the CW, but I’ve never heard anyone here talk about it in any personal way.
Central Indiana and no parades seen. My count of flag sightings since the furor is up to seven. Some of them have been flying from vehicles that wouldn’t fit the stereotyped image like today’s mid-sized sedan. All flags looked to be in extremely good condition so these aren’t old, heavily displayed flags. All of them are full sized flags.
It’s about the public reaction I expected, to be honest.
I haven’t seen any parades here in Columbia, Missouri. And, in general I only see that flag very occasionally around here at all. I did see a guy in the grocery store a month or so ago wearing a t-shirt with a Confederate flag on it. The flag had the Nazi SS symbol superimposed on it. One can only assume the gentleman was equally proud of both his Southern and his German heritage.
The very thought of that happening in Santa Barbara is ludicrous.
This reminds me of the time that I was in New Orleans on vacation fifteen years ago or so. The same weekend that I was there, a Harley dealership had just opened and it turns out that whenever a new Harley dealership opens it’s an excuse for a giant biker rally to happen. So Bourbon Street was packed with scary looking biker dudes who were, of course, totally cool and having a great time.
Except there was this one guy who was kind of scrawny but tough looking. I watched him for a while because my then wife was in a store and I was waiting outside for her. He was wearing a t-shirt that said something like The Five Flags of Alabama on it with the US Flag and the State Flag and some Confederate Flags. He had his chest all puffed out and he was looking everyone in the eye waiting for high fives or arguments and no one gave a shit. It was hilarious.
More likely he was equating the two and was anti-Confederate Flag. What a bad idea for a t-shirt though. The message is pretty unclear and could result in an ass kicking from a wide range of people.
Actually the Stars & Bars & Swastika is one of the newer White Power/Aryan Nation-like flags out there. The serious haters gave up on the regular rectangular version of the Battle Flag years ago and started making up their own creations. Judging by the creativity displayed, I’m not terribly worried.
Haven’t seen much evidence of confederate battle flags here. Once in awhile you see a pickup with a decal in the read window or some such. There’s certainly been no recent change.
The situation reported by the OP sounds pretty sick.
We were in Oxford, MS last week and didn’t see a single Confederate flag in town or on campus. In our inside the Beltway DC suburb it’s even more unlikely we’ll see one.
There was also a slogan under the flag. IIRC, it was “Support Your Local Remaining Few.” Googling that didn’t turn up much, except for a site selling white supremacist stuff. So, I think he was a real white supremacist. There is a neo Nazi group, in a little town not far from here, that advertises on Craigslist. So I’m not giving anyone around here the benefit of the doubt.
