I’m about half way between Lowell and Boston, and unfortunately our town has two geniuses with pickups flying full sized USA and Confederate flags. Or maybe just one genius with two trucks.
I know; ain’t it great? No doubt I could see a lot more Confederate flags if I took a jaunt over to Palatka.
Middle Tennessee:
My 7 year old daughter and I were stopped at a light to make a left-hand turn and saw a line of 6 or 7 pick-up trucks flying Confederate flags from their truck beds. My daughter suggested we boo them, so as I made the left-hand turn, we rolled our windows down, gave them the thumbs down sign and booed. I told a couple of other people about it and they had seen these same trucks in different parts of town, so I assume they were parading around town all day Saturday.
I suppose the only silver lining in the midst of all the ignorant assholes defending that flag is that it has provided an opportunity for my daughter and I to have some really good conversations about some really complicated topics that frankly, I would have avoided talking about had she not flat out asked what the big deal about that flag is.
New Orleans - I’m seeing more on houses than two weeks ago.
Which is why we need to claim it back.
There is a car here at my apartment building that since (of all days) the 4th of July, has had a flagpole with a Confederate battle flag on it sticking out of the passenger side.
Well, since you ask…
As I said I lived in Oxford MS for several years and saw a lot of that flag. My fondest memory, however, was when I and some others took down one of said flags and had an ass whiping party. In addition to our natural bodily functions we wrote on it with a sharpie to impart a few choice pieces of wisdom. We returned the owner s flag via the mailbox and in the two further years that I lived there it never flew on in front of the house again. Of course, that meant little compared to its prevalence elsewhere on football weekends, but it was satisfying nonetheless.
edit:oh by the way my family got out of that shithole and we are much happier for it.
I haven’t seen any parades but Confederate flags, stickers, “Keep It Flying” bumper stickers etc. are pretty common. I know of at least 3 houses within a couple of miles of mine that have Confederate flags flying on poles in the yard. A group called League of the South has recently been putting up billboards around the state that say “SECEDE”, including one probably 1 1/2 miles from my house. (Tuscaloosa, AL)
You said you had a ass whiping party when you meant you dropped your pants and wiped your ass, which was apparently dirty or else you did not do much to the flag. IMO ( ass whipping means you beat him up ) (( ‘whiping’ means you can’t proof read any better than I can. )) Now that is an inslut… Bawahahahaha ( see what I did there? )
Was the person at home? Did you tell him it was you? Hummmmm Were you under 18 when you did this? Hummm
How high do you wear your pants?
General question: Why did it take until 2015 for all this flag hate to become the latest mob mentality thing? Digging up graves? Defacing statues, after 150 years this is now a thing?
Anyone who has a flag like that is a traitor? Really. If so , I guess you are 100% behind what that much revered soldier General Sherman did on his march to the sea. Must be nice to be able to point out what a great man he was for doing that. The women & children in his way probably saw it a bit different. :smack:
1864 from 2015 = 151 years and just now you are so incensed about that flag? Bawahahahaha
I used to vacation in the south, mostly Hilton Head, SC. Then, around 1995 there was some talk about removing the confederate flag from the Capitol. A counter protest involved mostly pickup trucks with giant flags parading up and down the main drag, with the occupants shouting racial epithets. It was probably the first time my five year old daughter heard the n word.
I was disgusted and decided to take my vacation dollars elsewhere, and haven’t been back.
On the bright side, I found out the Caribbean Sea outdoes the Atlantic Ocean any day.
Probably the same dude with the “Protected by Smith & Wesson” sticker on his ginormous pickup truck who tried to run me off the road a few years back. It was near Burlington/Bedford, but I’m sure he gets around. <.<
I saw a pickup truck driving down route 17 in Jacksonville on July 4th blaring “Sweet Home Alabama” with two drunk people in the bed of the truck waving gigantic Confederate battle flags.
An oasis of learning in north Florida…
But yeah, I know the statue. Also that the locals who aren’t uni professors are still often very…well, Confederate-y.
We should let them go this time. It would save the federal government millions of dollars.
Yep. I’ve lived here for 2 years so far, and hadn’t seen one. Then I saw two pickups drive past me in one week waving big-ass Rebel flags from the rear.
We pointed and laughed.
Now who can argue with that? I think we’re all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I’m particularly glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.
Come on. You were all thinking it.
Nope.
But I don’t want to have to move.
I have only seen one confederate flag flying around my Atlanta suburb. It was an interesting sight and a cautionary tale. The flag (and 3-4 pro-flag bumper stickers) was flying atop an old, lifted Chevy Blazer. I was 2 cars behind it at a red light when the driver, a mountain of a boy with a shaved head and long red goatee, got out of the Blazer and began to walk pointedly toward the car directly in front of me. The target vehicle began backing up, causing me to lay on my horn to avoid getting hit. It then did a U-turn through 2 lanes of traffic, went up a curb onto the grass in front of a gas station and floored down the wrong side of the road. It was nothing short of a miracle that the driver did not cause a major accident in his rush to flee.
I can only imagine that the car driver/passenger offered a hand gesture to the good 'ol boy and he decided to “uphold his honor”. I firmly believe that not everyone who flies the CFB is a violence prone racist, but be aware that anyone who would publicly display one on their vehicle at this particular time has a high likelyhood to check both boxes. Don’t do anything silly and get yourself (and others around you) into a dangerous situation.
I’ve lived in Texas for nearly 30 years now. I have never seen anyone flying the Stars and Bars, but I have seen many T-shirts, baseball caps, bumper stickers and the like with the Stars and Bars on them.
I’ve also seen numerous high schools named after Confederate heroes, and more than a few of them have nicknames like “The Rebels.” Sometimes, fans of such schools will wave the Stars and Bars after a touchdown. In general, these teams’ best players are black, naturally
But even the few people who DO wave that flag will swear on a stack of Bibles that they don’t mean any offense by it, and most of them seem sincere.
Raise my count to 8 confirmed with one likely but unconfirmed (long distance and limited observation time.) The confirmed addition fits the stereotype of a pickup truck. The possible was a stereotype busting mid sized sedan. The confirmed sighting also sported the American colors and a POW/MIA flag for an interesting mix.
Yep, a local guy has tried to file a human rights complaint, apparently against a TV station for biased coverage on the flag debate, and against a flag shop for not selling the flag anymore.
Yes, it’s silly.
No, the complaint won’t go anywhere.
Confederate flag supporter in Saskatchewan files human rights complaint
Saskatchewan man says treatment of confederate flag unfair, files complaint
No organized events in Little Rock. (that I’ve heard about)
its been many years since I saw the South’s battle flag on any vehicles. Certainly not flying in any yards. We have a significant black population and that would be very ill–advised.
