Are There Dictionaries of Idioms & Such?

I was wondering if SDopers hav ever come across a dictionary of expressions, idioms, slang, vinacular, colloquialism etc., etc… Also, ideally, has anyone seen such a book written as a thesaurus to such expressions, as well???

If so, can you tell me the name(s) of such a book, or how to search it down…

Thanks,

There’s all kinds of them. (I work as a puzzle editor, so I’ve got a shelf of 'em that I own personally, and there’s another two shelves in the office library.)

Go to Amazon and search under books/reference/dictionaries and thesauruses/slang and idiom.

Tell me what you’re looking for, and I may be able to make some recommendations – there are both reference books (general dictionaries, dictionaries broken down chrononolgically or by subculture, thesauruses, etc.), and also more general books with etymologies, etc.

I googled urban slang dictionary and came up with this one

Hey, Jinx–

This won’t help with procuring a physical idiom dictionary-- and I know they’re out there, but I’m not sure if any are in thesaurus form-- but there are great “specialty” dictionaries here, with an entire section on idioms: http://www.yourdictionary.com/specialty.html

Hope this helps.

Cool link, Moody – I added it to my favorites and sent it around here at the puzzle factory. Thanks!

Thanks y’all for the recommendations. Haven’t had time to check 'em out yet…will post again ASAP! As for looking for anything specific, I’m just curious to see what these books may have…flip through some pages, etc. Will know it when I see it kind of thing! But, thanks everyone for their rec’s! - Jinx
