In Hawaii’s case, we are very proactive against any and all potentially invasive species. Snakes are outlawed here too, and we may be the only state in that regard. Snakes are why there are no more birds on Guam, they ate them all, and Hawaii is not about to let that happen here. You wanna see some authorities freak out big time? Phone in a report of a snake sighting.
For ferrets, you can find some in the wild. I remember at the university, there was a family of ferrets living in the bushes that some of the students kept feeding.
Hawaii also has strict laws about parrots on display. They cannot be full flighted, they must be pinioned or otherwise permanently deflighted. Authorities fear escape and the establishment of feral colonies.
We’ve got wild Nanday parakeets down here in SW FLA and yeah, they are very screechy. 20 years ago, I never saw or heard them. Now I hear them so often I don’t even look up.
Peach-faced love birds here. They’ll hang around an area for a week or so then move on so we hear them about every two months. We call them divorce birds because their call sounds like squabbling.
Michigan used to outlaw ferrets. A lawmaker told me that when they were considering changing this law, they saw more letters and got more phone calls than they do for a lot of other issues that impact a much higher proportion of people in the state. The pro-ferret crowd mobilized!
I would love to be privy to the conversation in the joint when the miscreant is explaining to fellow inmates – murderers, kidnappers, embezzlers – that his/her offense was being caught with seven dildoes.
I once flew into Salt Lake City to meet my girlfriend (later wife). Had a wonderful couple of days. Mormon TSA agents really don’t know what to do when faced with a carry-on bag with various “toys” in it. They had no idea what they were and kept holding them up to examine, while the people in line behind me giggled hysterically.
Reminds me of a news story about a guy who had some sort of toy in his carry-on, and the screeners at first thought it was a bomb. Germany, I think it was.
