Depends which borscht you’re talking about:
Eeew. That doesn’t have any meat in it. And sugar? There ought to be a labelling law that’s being broken, there.
The video reviewer had it right, I’m sure: 1 star. “Awful”
Notice that the topic, “You Can Never Hate Ohio State Too Much”, has NOT been banned because, well … one can never hate Ohio State too much!
Go, Texas!!
Thank you for that. This is exactly what my Dad would heat up in the microwave, and then eat with sour cream. Manischeitz brand borscht was available in several varieties at the Russian market I mentioned earlier. I have no idea how popular it was. IIRC The market did eventually make and sell the stuff fresh. I don’t know if that had any meat in it. I wasn’t interested and never checked. I do dearly miss that and the other Russian market that was a short bus ride away. At that one, you could buy a fresh baked lavash (flatbread, mozarella, feta, sesame seeds, sesame oil, unidentifiable dut delicious spices) for only $2.99! The thing was big enough for several meals. For a long time I brought a lavash to any pot luck I attended.
Now imagine your opinion of borscht after being traumatized from being fed that crap when you were a child as happened to me and @DocCathode. I had good borscht eventually, but I’m adventurous and curious in the food space.
I just ran across this on another board and realized it belongs on this list:
Is it ok to recline your airplane seat in economy class?
Both sides are firmly dug in on their positions and aren’t likely to budge no matter how much it gets debated.
I see what you did there

“Uh, that’s The Ohio State.”
[/snotty]
Well, the irony is that, as much as I chortled over Michigan’s stunning victory at Ohio State a few weeks ago, it had the effect of totally enraging and focusing them. They were stung by the embarrassment, and they have been on a mission that is going to result in a national title. I’m thinking their win will be at least a couple of touchdowns and will be very reminiscent of Alabama’s thrashing of Notre Dame in the national title game a few years back.
Hah, I was thinking this was a “few years back” too! Turns out it was 12 years ago! Geez, I’m getting old!
Same here, I thought it was 2016. Uggggh. 2012.
Never understood why we aren’t allowed to talk about mens disadvantages. I feel like the mods should be less strict on what we can and can’t talk about because it’s honestly feeling like censorship at this point. Then again, I might be stepping over a line. I don’t want this place to turn into channerville but I and other people would like to be able to talk about mostly whatever.
The “tired topics” are banned because they (a) have been thrashed to death here over the course of 26 years, and (b) are topics which had invariably brought out trolls and/or conspiracy theorists.
No. “The State of Ohio” and I concur.
Yeah, I understand that. I get not wanting that stuff from a mods point of view, if I were a mod, I’d get tired of it too. Guess I just didn’t realize how far back the “tired topics” span. But, I guess less rules on hijacking, allowing to have freer discussions with politics and other things would be nice at the very least.
The reason I’m skeptical about the “we can’t have threads about a topic because it’s been thrashed to death” argument is that we allow discussions about plenty of other topics that have been thrashed even more. Abortion, for instance, isn’t off-limits even though it’s been debated far more than men’s rights advocacy. We have like 10,000 threads about Donald Trump yet nobody has ever said “Trump is discussed so much that we need to ban him as a topic.”
You aren’t the only one here who doesn’t like hijacks being shut down, and who would prefer free-wheeling discussion. But, the sense I have is that most Dopers prefer that discussions stay on-topic, and that’s why the moderation is what it is (particularly in certain forums).
It’s not just that they’ve been thrashed to death. It’s also that, as I noted, that handful of topics also invariably brings out trolls, cranks, and CT weirdos.
Kind of a bummer but it makes sense.
That’s because he keeps adding fresh material. Maybe after he’s been put on display under the rotunda he’ll cease being a topic. I’m doing a Carter, and refusing to die until that day comes.
as a rule, I no longer comment in the general “Trump is a jerk” threads. If there is a specific action or policy at issue, then maybe I’ll join in, but Trump bashing as a performative act is pointless at this point. I don’t know that there is anything he can do that would make me think any less of him.
