I have noticed that prices for very good watches are dropping. I just bought a very nice analog Seiko chronograph not too long ago for $100, and a Timex analog chronograph – thick and solidly built, doesn’t seem in the least bit cheap, looks very similar to a Tag Heuer or Swiss Army watch, and includes a 1/20th second dial – for $30. Both new.
Personally, I prefer watches for timekeeping. They’re more convenient than a cell phone, and I think an analog dial makes it easier to discern time, much like an analog speedometer is easier to read than a digital equivalent.
Oh yeah, I know they’ve been around at least since the 60s, if not before, but it’s only in the last few years that I’ve been seeing some ads for these again, from one or more of the better watch companies, something on the level of Tag-Heuer or Breitling, or maybe it was even a Rolex. IIRC they call them something else now, probably because they believed that “winding” would sound too quaint; furthermore I don’t believe they are self-winding per se, but rather that the motion keeps a battery recharged.
I haven’t worn a watch regularly since I got out of the Navy in 1968. I’ve bought a couple many years ago since, but I always forgot to wear it or left it in the restroom. So it’s probebly been thirty-five years or so since I’ve worn one.
I rarely need to know the time, and when I do I look at a handy clock or ask someone. Or I peek at someone’s watch. Sometimes they try to hide it.
I just had an epiphany;
It’s been a lpng long time since anyone’s asked me for the time, or since I’ve asked by someone else! Could this be related to the OP?
Peace’
