I think so…you grow a tree for years, it absorbs carbon. You cut it down and later throw into a dump/landfill. The carbon gets buried.
So am I helping against AGW by killing my Xmas tree? how much geed is this doiing? (as opposed to Al Gore’s carbon footprint?
No. Christmas trees don’t generally go into landfill. They’re often chipped and mulched or composted; some places sell the chips as biomass (burned to produce electricity). It all ends up in the air sooner or later.
Why would someone put an Xmas tree in the landfill? The local garbage company treats them like yard waste: they go to the composting facility. There are also dump off sites at fire stations, big box hardware stores, etc. where they get chopped and turned into mulch. In either case, some carbon is released as they break down, some gets mixed into the top soil but could be released if not deeply buried.
Even if you went out of your way here and took it to the landfill, they have a separate spot for yard waste. Again- mulched and composted then sold. You’d have to ignore verbal/written notices of where to take your tree to have it end up in the landfill proper.
Sigh…
Really? With all the travel and transportation of goods and manufacturing associated with the holiday season (and the modern world in general) do you really, really think that Christmas trees make a bit of freakin’ difference?! Either enjoy your standard of living or move to a cabin in the woods…
One might even argue that Christmas Trees are a bad idea, carbon-wise, as they tend to be cut down when small and young, rather than allowed to grow up into massive full-size trees.
In terms of the usage of lumber in the world, whether for building or burning for fuel etc., the fraction that is taken up by Xmas trees is so ridiculously low as to be zero. So why should we care about a resource that has essentially zero impact on anything? What about the wax burning in all those menorahs? Isn’t that adding to greenhouse gases?!? It’s that ridiculous…
