Heck, if you twist my arm I’ll drink it on a warm evening.
I appreciatee a fine cognac, but I’m really partial to spanish brandy-my favorite is Gran Duc De Alba-wonderful taste and aroma-but hard to find (you can get it in places where there are a lot of Cuban-Americans). What puzzles me: Armagnac is supposed to be a coarser, cheaper spirit that cognac-so why is it so expensive in the USA? Where I am, a good armagnac costs at least $15.00/fifth more than cognac.
Armagnac is just another region like Cognac
Like Minnesota and Illinois
- being a bit less known, it appeals to the booze snobs, but it can be pretty darn good
A normal Remy Martin is a nice consistent brandy, a bit like its scotch equivalent of Johnnie Walker Black Label.
Personally I like just about any brandy, a rough Grappa goes down well with an Expresso and an inexpensive brandy cut with soda (UK soda =/= US soda ) is a good session drink.
(especially as it is a frowned upon South African deviation )
@Rigmarole, a brandy glass is also called a snifter, it doubles as a measuring device and a way of getting a kick from the fumes
- also expensive does not definitely mean good - it just means expensive.
I drink Hennessey now and then. Do people ever use it for cooking?
Remy Martin and Courvoisier are all right to have around for a nightcap.
When I switched workplaces recently after twenty years, one of the key people whose decisions influenced my exit gave me a bottle of Chateau Montifaud. It was pretty good, as lame-assed apologies go.
I actually learned this just the other day! Someone at one of my tables ordered up some Hennessy and asked for it “in a snifter”. I did a double-take and said “In a wha??” and he explained it to me. I always thought they were cool glasses, now I know they have an even cooler name.
That comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
I am quite fond of Ragnaud-Sabuorin (Premier Cru), and I’m currently working on a very nice bottle of Maison Prunier 20 year.
I tend to enjoy Armangac more, but will drink Cognac as well. The lesser Cognacs are nice with a little soda water and ice. I’ve never done that with Armagnac, but I tend to have to pay more for that. My supposition on that is that it’s not got as broad as appeal as the mass marketed / well known Cognacs. Either are good with a good cigar after a nice meal, especially if it’s cool out.
