Are you a fan of horror movies/

YouTube has been flooded (seemingly) with videos discussing the recent release of “Longlegs”, and I am wondering, if you enjoy horror movies, do you have regrets when the movie is over? Does every innocuous sound, that any other night would be disregarded, startle you? Does every closed door look ominous? Do you have trouble sleeping that night? Finally, do you ask yourself “Why did I watch that movie”?

I love horror movies, though not much the slasher-type movies, but more the psychological or monster type films. And depending on the film, I do occasionally still make sure the doors are locked before bed, and get a shiver when I walk my dog out in the night air.

I’m not a big fan.

I was recently encouraged to watch the Exorcist.

First, it was not my favorite movie, by far.
Second, I didn’t realize the back story, at all.
Third, I found it more gross than scary.

It was worth watching. And, I’m glad I jumped that hurdle.

I’m ok with Hitchcock. Those campy Vincent Price things.

Not apt to be watching Freddy Krueger or the Halloween franchise. Or Zombie type things. Not even that old one, Night if the Living Dead…Romero or no.

Gimme the ScoobyDoo mysteries anyday.

I do watch Svengoolie every week. His humor helps.

The Longlegs thing just doesn’t appeal to me.

Have no trouble separating reality from fictional movies.

I love horror movies, they are probably my favorite genre. Longlegs was great! That’s very much in the Silence of the Lambs/Se7en/Zodiac serial killer thriller vein, which are some of my top films of all time.

I also love the super gory disturbing body horror type.

I have no problem separating reality from fiction, seeing a disturbing horror film does not make me scared of real things.

I enjoy horror movies quite a bit, but I don’t watch very many new ones these days. As a wee lad, my parents were fairly lax when it came to what I watched. I was 5 or 6 when I saw Poltergeist, about 10 when I saw Silver Bullet, and who knows how I old I was when I first watched the various Friday the 13th movies?

The only horror movies I can remember seeing in the theater these days few years was Alien: Covenant and the remake of Fright Night. Fright Night was okay. I should really go back and revisit some classics like An American Werewolf in London.

Horror movies are great! There is a place for dumb slasher flicks, but I do prefer the more involved stories.

Gore does not bother me in the slightest. When I was very young my father very thoroughly explained special effects to me, and ever since then I basically only see the effects, but I still appreciate them on their own merit.

And heck, I work in a medical library. Thumbing through any number of random books off the shelf I can see innumerous, detailed images of actual human gore, e.g. a whole book of high resolution photos of 1/4 inch slices of entire human bodies from head to sole and shoulder to shoulder, male, female, and baby. :grimacing:

I prefer horror books, because they’re scarier, but I’m always open to horror movies as well. That said, I don’t see many movies, so I’m way behind in these discussions.

Psychological horror, yes. Gore? No, not at all.

Yes. And slasher movies are so boring.

Anything with torture I refuse to watch. Too much of that going on IRL to find it “entertaining.”

Always hated them.
Before I was a christian they scared me.
Afterwards, they depress me.
I only like comedies.

One of my favorites from when I was a kid is on right now.

Dracula (1931)

And you’ve got to love those armadillos in the castle ruins.

Same here! I love horror films, but can’t watch gore. I also can’t watch “torture porn”.

In answer to the OP, it only rarely stays with me - for example, one scene in Hereditary really stuck with me because it was both horrific and very realistic.

I like psychological horror like Yellowjackets and thriller movies. I thought I liked slasher movies but find them to be mostly all the same. I am planning on watching the Halloween movies from the original timeline though since the slow-burn of the first one seemed perfect for s slasher. Longlegs wasn’t the best to me. The first 40 minutes was good but the 3rd act ruined it.

I am reading some horror books and find the one I’m currently reading to be good.

I thought the movie MaXXXine were pretty good and I liked The Babadook a lot. 30 Days of Night is a pretty good vampire horror movie if you hate how they’re portrayed noawadays.

Horror crime and Horror thriller seem to be my favourite so far. Also Comedy Horror seems great like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Other than that, I’m pretty overwhelmed by anything digital media related, so I won’t be watching a lot.

I can definately understand why they depress ppl. Some horror even depresses me sometimes.

1930s Universal movies, yes. Anything from today no.
I can watch the evening news anytime if I want horror.

I like horror movies like Carrie, The Shining, The Changeling, The Exorcist, Interview with a Vampire, etc. You know, the big budget, mainstream Hollywood stuff.

The slasher flicks, even the bigger ones with Michael, Freddy, and Jason were ruined for me during their seventies and eighties heyday by my friends who dragged me to see practically all of them. They really got boring after awhile. Fake scare, real scare, fake scare, real scare, etc.

In general, I don’t love gore for the sake of gore. I know it’s all fake, so that’s dull for me too.

I do love a good riffing on these films in MST3K style formats. Ever check out MST3K treatments of The Giant Spider Invasion or Manos, the Hands of Fate? Hi-larious.

YouTube also features these review channels like Fanboy Flicks and Space Ice which are reliably funny. Although Space Ice mostly does action movies.

And no, even with straight horror movies, I don’t suffer any “What was that?!!!” type disturbances afterwards. I know it’s all a show, and that can be a curse on the total experience of getting the chills.
