I have two tattoos, one in honor of the rock band Queen and the St.Louis Rams logo.
I’m the number one fan of the man from Tennessee. No, wait. . . .
Seriously, it’s the Bonzo Dog Band, of course.
I’m also probably the #1 fan of comedienne/singer Christine Nelson, mostly because I doubt there’s anyone else who has any idea who she was.
Writers Guy Gavriel Kay and George R.R. Martin. I obsess over the latter’s ongoing series at a level that would make a diehard Trekkie back away slowly.
I’m also the biggest Billy Joel fan in the Middle East, not that that’s saying much.
Nazareth (Hair of the Dog fame) took their name from the opening line of The Bands song The Weight. But I’m not a weird Nazareth freak or anything… Nor Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull either. Nope. Not me. You all just go ahead with your weird obsessions and leave me out of it. I’ll just go back to scheming how to justify a Bengal.
The White Stripes
I have all the music. I’ve probably seen “Under Blackpool Lights” close to 100 times now. I’ve gone to see them live 9 times in three different continents in the past 12 months (5 distinct cities including Blackpool, England and Detroit, Michigan).
You could say that I’m pretty fond of the band.
I’d be overreaching if I called myself the biggest Derek Trucks or Derek Trucks Band fan out there - I know people who have been following his career since he was 12. But I’ve seen him eight or nine times with his own band and about three dozen times with the Allman Brothers, and I’ve written what I think is the definitive Derek Trucks Band article to this point in their career (they seem to agree with me). So I think I’m up there, at least.
I would say The Incredible String Band, but there are fans far more devoted than I am. One pilgrim has Robin Williamson’s face tattooed on one butt cheek and Mike Heron’s, from this album cover, on the other. Compared to her, I’m a dilettante.
The Irish National Soccer Team.
Follow them around Europe and around the world. Even more impressive when you consider that I live in Chicago!
Well, duh, Happy Rhodes. I’ve been a besotted fan for 18 years, was responsible for another fan creating her Internet mailing list ecto, which has been going strong for over 15 years (it has to be one of the oldest continuous fan lists on the net); have seen her live 24 times (all but 2 of those involved interstate travel, and all but 2 of those involved traveling halfway across the country); maintain multiple fan web sites, such as a song samples page, a rarities page for geeky fans, and a site detailing her live shows; started and maintain 2 MySpace pages, though this is her primary MySpace page; and have made pages and submitted songs to at least 2-3 dozen artist sites (such as Mixposure, Independent Artists Company, the Podsafe Music Network, and MP3unsigned, among other things. All of these things are done with her permission, btw. I’m a dismal choice to have been given this fandom responsibility, but luckily, she thinks I’m pretty wonderful anyway. We’re in frequent e-mail contact, and she’s thanked me on most of her album liner notes, which is always a thrill for a fan.
Before Happy I was a besotted Kate Bush fan (a “flew to London for fan conventions…twice”, type of fan), and before Kate I was a besotted Peter Gabriel/Genesis fan.
Albert Switzer.
And not that Doctor fellow, either. This guy.
Tom Waits. I have most of his albums, I’ve read a long book compiling articles about him and interviews with him, and I finally got to see him perform live in Atlanta in August – drove up there eight hours from Orlando, waited in front of the stage for three hours to get the perfect dead-front-and-center vantage point, and drove straight home after the show to get in at 7 AM and be at work by 9. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience overall seeing him. So I doubt I’m his number-one fan since I wasn’t even listening to him before 2001 or so, but I’m the biggest fan I know these days, in these parts.
I’m a pretty huge fan of Quentin Tarantino, Joss Whedon, Edward Norton, Dick Dale, Brian Setzer, and the relatively unpopular comic book superheroes Blue Beetle (who is dead) and Starman (who retired), but I’m sure there are bigger fans than me of those folks as well.
I’m a Frank Herbert fanatic.
I have every novel and story ever published, many in multiple editions, several essays and magazine prints, and a tattered autographed copy of Dune Messiah. Extra tidbits include National Lampoon’s Doon and The Dune Pop-Up Book.
I haughtily scoff and sneer everytime I’m in the “H” section of the bookstore and see the Brian Herbert prequel abominations on the shelves.
My only wish (in case any altruistic Dopers need Christmas list ideas) is for a nice copy of the Avalon Hill’s Dune board game.
Santiago Segura.
Look him up on the iMDB.
Whatcha gonna do about “Hunters of Dune”, where Brian and co-conspirator Kevin write a novel based on Papa Frank’s outlines and notes?
Russ Ballard. He was the lead singer of Argent. I have everything he ever recorded or has been involved with. I first laid eyes and ears on him when I was 13 years old and Argent was on the very first Midnight Special.
I’m 47 and still adore him…
I am a number one fan of The Who? Yes. I’m a fan of YES, too. And I do I like the Guess Who? I do. That should clarify matters, I think.
And hey, Russ Ballard wrote songs for and played guitar with Roger Daltrey. “Barnet Dogs” and “In Deep” are 2 of my favorite albums.
I’m pretty sure I know more about The Simpsons than Matt Groening does (though not everything), based on some of the surprised statements he makes in the commentaries- for example, not knowing what episode the “I am Evil Homer” dream sequence comes from. I didn’t earn the honorary title in my sig for nothing.
Oh, yes- it’s from Whacking Day.
I wouldn’t have thought I could come close to qualifying for No. 1 status in anything until I opened this thread.
But I’m a big fan of Futurama. While I can’t score well in trivia, my admiration for the artwork, the writing, the vocal talent, is definitely No. 1.
And I admire Dorothy L. Sayers’ novels and stories about Lord Peter Wimsey to create an annotation section on my Web site. But until it’s finished, I’m probably just cracking the top 10 on that one.
So many cool and interesting replies! You don’t have to actually be the Number One Fan, I just always think of Kathy Bates- “I’m your Number One Fan”, whenever I think of fandom.
Myself. I can’t get over me. Seriously. I think I “Rock”.
