Are you a racist? Warning signs

I’ve been to the south side of Chicago, used to live there. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Which is, yeah, a lot of people who live in mixed neighborhoods are super racist. And what’s worse, they think they are uniquely justified in being racist because hey THEY know what those people are like.

Stop it. You’re embarrassing yourself, Chicago, the south side, and the White Sox. I’m not a south sider nor a Sox fan and right now I’m glad I’m not.

Perfectly stated.

I know I have racist thoughts or reactions on occasion. I try to pay attention when I do to try to work through them and understand their ridiculousness.

And I’m okay with the idea that everyone’s a little racist. It’s up to us to see when we are and to fight against it.

“Nigger just means an ignorant person.”

I’ve married a grand total of one woman. She’s white like me. I guess I’m racist.

I live in Vermont. Our town’s entry on Wikipedia lists it as 99.8% white. The 0.2% is our mailwoman. I like her. But regardless, I guess we’re all KKK members waiting to be recruited. Oh, and I moved here not because of the racial makeup, but because it was literally the only house on the market in our price range when we were looking.

Also because I’m racist, though, it turns out.

“Opposite race”? Seriously?

Guys, give it up. This one can’t be taught. He’s not interested in learning.

This may have been the truth 30 years ago, but not so much now. Sure, there are still racist dads. But there are a lot fewer racist dads.

And yes, believing that your daughter shouldn’t date certain races is a racist belief.

We’ve been over this, and the definitions are pretty clear. You just don’t like that saying “black people are inherently genetically less intelligent, on average” (and the like) is considered a racist thing to say.

I would say the usual suspects don’t see their racism as wrong. Shunned, maybe. But not factually, empirically wrong. We’re the hippies living in fantasy land. Why should the racists, who know the truth, change?

Some people think that if they truly believe they have good evidence that, say, black people are genetically less intelligent, or inherently more violent, then it somehow doesn’t count as a racist claim. As if all racists throughout all of history didn’t believe that they had good reason to think that a particular group was dumb/violent/greedy/liars/etc.

Beverly hills? Most people on the South Side just call it Beverly.
Are you unaware of the Straight Dope/ Chicago Reader connection? SDMB has a strong Chicago presence.
And while I’m addressing you, why must you drag The Chicago White Sox into your stupidity?

Ummm…

Never.

Never.

No.

No, because I’ve never said anything racist in my entire 46 years.

I’ve never made a comment or a joke about another race.

No, never.

Ha. What? No, never.

Never.

Never.

Yes, because the folks that I know that are like minded, all believe that every race is equal. The only people who disagree? Racists.

Bwahahahahahaha! Are we talking about “reverse racism” where a bunch of racists whine about not getting to use the appropriate bad word when rappers do? Or the ones who got passed over for the job that they weren’t qualified for due to some minority being affirmative actioned into place? Yeah, no.

What the hell? Is that a thing now? The pretzels those fools will tie themselves up into is hilarious hijinks indeed.

Never, never, never.
Thank you, Little Nemo, that’s literally the easiest poll I’ve ever taken.

I have and it’s about the same as anywhere. But no matter what, the environment you’re in doesn’t give you license to be a racist. That’s all on you, dude.

Well worth repeating because this is the shit. The onus is always on ourselves to be the best people we can be. If you start doing something wrong, confront it and try to fix it. Don’t let it flourish, then coddle it and be proud in your ignorance. That’s not what a good and mature person does.

It’s not “one of a few.” Most people in the 21st century have run out of fucks to give, it’s only the racists who can’t be arsed to grow the fuck up and get over skin color.

I’ve learned that only white people can be racist here so relax.

I’m cracking up over chicagowhitesox1173. He knows something about black people. He’s been to the southside of Chicago. We obviously haven’t.

It amazes me how Dopers still assume that we’re all white people. I guess they think black people are too busy fulfilling negative stereotypes to type on a message board.

If you seriously think that it’s normal for dads to disapprove of their daughters dating interracially, then you have a lot to learn and you’ve had plenty of chances to learn in this thread.

That shit was normal in the past, and it unfortunately may still be normal in some communities, but it’s very racist, and it’s not normal through most of the US today.

Look at this way: if you stop saying other people share your dumbshit opinions, people will get less annoyed at you. They’ll still think you’re a total idiot, but at least they won’t be offended that you’re calling them racists.

You’ve never even made a comment about another race? Not even in elementary school or middle school?

Please don’t think I’m defending **whitesox1173 **or anything. Ignorant jackass and all that. I just think what you said is ridiculous.

Even if my father were alive and did object, that wouldn’t mean anything other than that my father was a racist. It would mean that when push came to shove he betrayed the very ideals he took such pains to instill in me, and it would have shocked me to my core.

But I would not have shrugged it off or ignored it or forgiven it or thought that because other people are racist my dad is allowed to be, too.

And if my father tried to pull chicagowhitesox1173’s arguments, I’d ask “If everyone jumps off a cliff, does that mean you should too?” That’d learn the old coot.

I’d like to take a moment to nod at the sexism inherent in “I wouldn’t let my daughter marry one.” It shouldn’t go unnoticed just because the statement is also really racist.

I don’t want you or anyone defending me. What the fuck, you coward, your gonna use my name to hide behind.

By the standards of this OP, I’m definitely a racist. Check on #s 1, 3, 6, and 10-12 (1 & 6 apply only on this board). And that’s fine. I don’t think this list means anything or that people here get to define the term racist, but if they do then being a racist is the way to go and that’s fine too.

What I do object to is being defined as racist based on these qualifications and then having the term used with the connotation of being some sort of KKK member or the like. But as long as we’re clear on what’s meant and not playing this type of game, it’s no big deal either way.

One thing that interests me about #10 & #12 is the correlation to thought control in totalitarian countries. I know a guy who grew up under the communists in Romania and what he describes is similar to what I see in other sources. People officially pledged allegiance to all sorts of things that they didn’t believe in, but for the most part were more interested in making it through life than in challenging the system, and tended to keep their heads down. That’s how I think it is WRT racial issues in this country. There are a lot of people who think this PC stuff has gone way too far, but the people most obsessed with racial issues and who press them more forcefully are of the PC variety, and the others tend to keep their heads down and try to make it through life without being negatively impacted by racial issues.

Where it all ends is an open question. If I had to guess, I would say it ends when the US becomes majority-minority, and the new majority, newly empowered but unconstrained by PC concerns, just tosses it all aside. But that’s just a wild guess.
