Massive increases in rent subsidies … that would get all 16 of my votes … no other issue would be considered.
Of course not.
Well, I think we’ve found Steven9001’s single issue.
When I lived out in Walter Jones’ district, I voted against him every time because of the whole “freedom fries” ridiculousness. Huge waste of time, that was.
Since I’m a gun owner, I’m supposed to be a one-issue voter. But since guns aren’t going to be banned, I’m not worried about it. I try to find folks who line up with me on most issues. You’ll never find someone you agree with 100% on everything.
I agree with this entirely and it is how I vote now.
To my conservative friends, I’m a liberal. Of course that is only because the Republican Party has gone so bat-shit crazy that anything less than extreme right is considered liberal. I would probably consider myself a centrist-moderate who leans heavily left on issues of equality and the separation of Church and State. I’m a gun owner but I support responsible gun control measures. I don’t believe the “gub’mint is gonna take our guns” fear mongering bullshit. I do believe there is no need for a person to have a 100-round drum magazine and banning such items and others like it does not infringe upon the 2nd amendment in any way. I believe “Assault Weapon Bans” are stupid for many reasons. I believe the best way to reduce the number of deaths by guns (unintentional deaths, not murders) is for the police to quit categorizing them as “accidents” and hold the gun owner liable when their irresponsibility results in a death. We need to be issuing strong wake-up calls to the millions of gun owners in this country. I’m pro-choice, believe anytime a woman has to have an abortion is… not sad per se but regrettable maybe?.. that they’re in that situation. I’m not sure the right word to describe how I feel on that one. But I believe and will always defend that it is the woman’s right to choose and I have no right to judge her decision and instead I have empathy for her having to make what may be a very difficult decision and support her decision. I would like to see less abortions and believe the best way to reduce the number of abortions is through early sex/reproductive education and the easy availability of contraception. I believe the U.S. should continue to have the strongest military that is properly equipped and trained to protect and defend our country and allies. I do not believe we need to be spending more than the next 7 nations. We can certainly cut the military budget while still be able to successfully protect and defend our country, our interests, and our allies. Lastly, I am satisfied with the ACA but I would have preferred a single payer system or universal healthcare. I believe that the greatest country in the world can and should provide healthcare for its citizens through taxation. My tax dollars provide me with education for my children, infrastructure, and police/fire protection and I’m perfectly fine with it also providing healthcare. I disagree with the left’s vilification of the “rich” and their characterizations of those who have obtained success resulting in financial security. I do agree though that the “rich” sometimes make it really hard to defend them. So I’m sure many here may disagree but I do consider myself a centrist-moderate.
I will never vote for another Republican candidate, not even for County Dog Catcher. The party is just too far off the rails at this point. So yes, my single issue is that if the candidate is a Republican, he/she will never receive my vote. There are too many extreme positions entrenched now in the party - a desire for a Christian-based theocracy in government, unreasonable 2nd amendment stances, unwillingness to even acknowledge the role of education and contraceptive access in reducing the number of abortions - it is pro-life abortion bans or nothing at all, the vilification of the “poor”, a virulent strain of anti-intellectualism and anti-science that is really embarrassing on the national level, and a shameless level of subservience to “business” over “human beings”.
So yeah… next question?
If you ran for office right now you’d have my vote.
“Hey kid, catch!” - Paid for by the Committee to Elect MeanJoe.
I don’t vote single issue but I would if a candidate came forward with a detailed plan to control spending. But that probably won’t happen until we’re in a crisis situation. For now, Americans would prefer that no one take away the punch bowl.
