I think that police department budgets should be cut but abolishing police is a stupid idea and if Democrats campaign on that, you will see Speaker McCarthy and a reelection of Trump.
However, are you bothered that most US police unions are vocally endorsing Trump and the GOP swiftly?
Do Democrats look blatantly antipolice? A lot of cops in NYC, LA, say they will be protecting Republican voters from now on and that Democratic voters are on their own.
“A lot of cops say…”
Really? Where do they say this? And, how can they tell a Republican from a Democrat? Do they have some kind of police-issued party detector?
No democrat of any significance is going to abolish the police. Joe Biden has said he won’t defund but instead push reform in policing. Some of these policies would be training standards, emphasis on community policing, having a database so bad cops who get fired can’t get a job on the force at a nearby town etc.
No, you misunderstand: it’s programs like Newsmax and Fox. They’re reliable. They’re totally unrelated to the coincidentally-named platforms of Newsmax and Fox.
Wait, so we’re arguing that we shouldn’t upset the people that actively advocate NOT protecting certain people based on their political beliefs (actually demographics, but whatever)?
Fuck 'em. Know who else essentially requires support “or else something bad might happen”? The mafia.
“Defund the Police” is the greatest idea that Democrats have ever had to ensure the election of Republicans. Hopefully the Republicans are smart enough to capitalize on it (but I’m not sure they are).
And for the police union support the Trump campaign has paid for a disgusting advertisement that says that attempts to defund the police will mean that there will be no police for rape, murders or looting.
The slogan ‘de-fund the police’ doesn’t worry me because passions will eventually fade and there will be a realization that whatever changes are made have to actually work. Just pulling money from police departments without any substantive ideas on how to reform policing won’t mean jack, and I think most policymakers - even the more activist ones - realize it.
What worries me about the left is the anarchist element that smells a lot like the anti-WTO and OWS crowds that have occasionally popped up as unwanted guests, tearing down statues, closing down thoroughfares and even neighborhoods, and so forth. I think a lot of people who never saw themselves as social justice activists want police reform. Some might even be okay with shifting funding away from the police and toward other types of intervention. But I bet few people are okay with anarchy and rioting.
As for police unions, a lot of the ones that defend the status quo simply reinforce the perception that policing is about preserving white supremacy, which is why I’m okay with abolishing and reorganizing police departments if that’s what is required. We’ve all been far too comfortable with the militarization of police departments for far too long and if we’re not careful, we’re going to have a nightmarish genie that won’t go back into its bottle.
This is exactly the kind of reaction that the fear mongering right-wing media is after. Congratulations. You’ve been frightened and cowed into believing a lie. As I see it, you have two choices: You can hide under your bed until after the election, or, you can change the channel and realize that 700K LEO that serve this nation aren’t all just going to abandon their oath and form a Republicans Only police force.
You misunderstand. The OP doesn’t believe it - he’s just telling us what other people believe (even though he’s made it clear that he’s not one of those people) and how those other people believing it will negatively impact the Democrats.
See also: pretty much every other thread the OP has started.
Not gonna happen. The public has been watching police batter peaceful protestors in response to the deaths of innocent citizens. They’re believing their own eyes.
The majority does not want to truly defund the police, true. Tellingly, though, they are sensitive to the nuances of the argument; that police are asked to do too many things they are not trained to do and money should be shifted appropriately. All the polls I’ve read show majorities in favor of these proposals.
If the Republicans think they can run on this issue, Democrats can only hope they make that mistake.
