So, what do you think one needs to know to count oneself as an edjucated person? I had a Western Civ teacher who thought that you had to have read 1984 along with knowing some major historical dates, such as D-Day, or the end of WWII. Me, I think you need to have at least seen Star Wars, but I’m pretty lenient.
So what do you think is desired to count yourself edjucated? To have read Rashomon? Understand the basis of the American Civil War? Being able to refer to yourself in the third person while still remaining gramattically correct?
I think you’d probably have to be able to spell educated. No j there buddy.
Seriously though, you’re educated as soon as you learn something. I’m educated when it comes to math and science stuff, but not when it comes to cars or sex :D.
I personally think history is relatively useless. I consider basic education to cover the basic sciences and math up through algebra. Also, literacy, and having been exposed to a few of the more famous works of literature out there. One should have read at least one Shakespeare play, and at least one or two “classics” Dickens, or Jane Austin, or such.
That’s basic education, where everybody should be.
To be considered educated, one should go beyond this, and be familiar with relativity, calculus, at least the basics of quantum physics, and hopefully the details of at least one other field of study. One should speak or read at least two languages. And one should be able to catch casually thrown references to literature. Also, being computer literate enough to be able to work out the basics of how to use a decently designed program would be nice.
I don’t think it’s all that much to ask. It’s where I was out of high school, for some perspective.
I realise that it’s biased in favor of math and science, but that’s okay. They’re more important.
The nearest antonym for educated is ignorant. You are ignorant if you unaware or uninformed of certain facts relative to a specific issue at hand. I think everybody except for Cecil[sup]*[/sup] is ignorant in some area, unless you’ve learned ansolutely everything there is to learn.
I think most people use educated to mean that you know how to behave in polite society. E.g.: Tarzan was certainly jugle-smart, but when rescued & brought into the modern world he certainly needed some special education.
[sup]*mandatory disclamer to avoid being struck by a bolt of lightning.[/sup]
one is edjumacated when one is able to realize that the OP was purposefully misspelling “educated” as somewhat of a pun - a subtly sarcastic twist, with a piquant bit of irony thrown in as a spice.
Otherwise, one is edjumacated when they know enough to hold an intelligent conversation in the topic of MY choosing, but not able to trump my points or point out where I’m wrong. At that point, they are just hauty.
All you really need to do is be able to appreciate the finer points of my personality ;), be fairly well read (I’m not terribly picky about the subject), have a reasonable vocabulary, reasonable spelling skills, and know a smattering of current events.
Well, I happen to know that if you’ve read Rashomon you haven’t read the story in the movie. Rashomon is the title a collection of short stories goes under. There is a story called Rashomon but it’s not the one made into a movie. That one’s called In a Grove.
I could not disagree more. In fact I would like to know what in the world you base that opinion on.
How can you make any sense of the world we live in now if you don’t know where it came from?
The other really cool thing about knowing history is understanding that the way things are is not the way the HAVE to be. The assumptions we live with now are just that, and are not eternal- they’re part of a set of circumstances. I think it’s very important for a human to know that. I would even put it above knowing how to program a computer.
