Are You Political Devil Spawn? (Opposite Political Views Than Your Entire Family)

I confess.

My parents, grandparents and brothers are all die-hard Republicans. I, however, have never voted for a Republican President in my life, and sure as hell won’t be doing it in 2004!

I am the political scourge of the family. I am the one they would gang up on during Thanksgiving dinners. “YOUR President said…” etc. etc.

How did I get this way? I mean, all I ever heard was their right-wing banter my entire life. Despite that, I just never bought it and was always the one to question their viewpoints. Don’t get me wrong. I am not a fanatic. I never vote a straight Democratic ticket, I have to know the candidate before I vote for them…and I have even voted for maybe 2 or 3 Republicans in lesser elections.

My question/poll:

  1. Are you also the only one in your family who votes differently?
  2. Does your family know it?
  3. Do you get grief for doing it?

Yes, yes, and yes. Of course, it wasn’t until about ten years ago that my parents started swinging to the right…my siblings have always been pretty conservative.

Then there’s me. I voted for Nader in 2000.

  1. Yes
  2. Yes, in spades.
  3. Used to, but they they don’t like tangling with me on it, so not much these days. Also, the embarrassment that is the Bush administration has quieted them down some.

1.) Yes
2.) Yes
3.) We’ve kind of agreed to disagree, or just not dicuss politics much anymore.

My father was an ivory tower academic liberal, and I quickly shed what ideas of his I hadn’t iniially rejected soon after going out on my own. I’ve voted for Dems and Republicans as merit or necessity may dictate, but I thoroughly reject the knee jerk left wing tendencies of the my family members.

All of my family are New Democrats like me, but I was in the dog house with my dad for a while when I admitted to being a Quebec nationalist (not a sovereignist). That was an interesting few weeks.
