We spend inordinate amounts of time talking about this whole left-right thing, even though for 90% of the content in the SDMB, it just flat out doesn’t matter. Not to mention that there are tons of issues, even in GD, that just don’t have the standard left-right breakdown. The whole issue is overblown, in my opinion.
I was thinking my own posts ran to “no signal, all noise” until the last few posts but compared with the parfait and German Shepherd crowd I’m feeling better about myself.

I agree with you completely on this. Most of the posters here are to the left of me,a fact which has no impact on most of my experience here.
I feel a little silly now for hurling such invective at Shodan when everyone else is keeping a fairly good humor. Cathartic, though.

Thing is, though, it’s not their job.
Their job is what they do to pay the rent and put food on the table. This board is an avocation, a hobby, for them. They don’t get paid for moderating, and about the only benefit they get from being moderators is that they can also participate in this board as members. If non-participation were the price to be paid for that position, i don’t anyone could be found to do it.
Now, just because moderators do the job for nothing doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t hold them up to decent standards. I’ve been critical of some moderating decisions before, and no doubt will be again. If someone can’t or won’t do the job fairly, then he or she should be relieved of duty. But to argue that moderators shouldn’t participate as members is asinine.
And to argue, as the OP did, that moderators are somehow responsible for ensuring political balance in each and every debate is the height of idiocy.
oh come on. I agree that the OP’s position is stupid, but this is the SDMB Surely we have better examples of the “height of idiocy” than that
