I have had alcohol purchases refused in the USA when trying to use a passport as ID, told that only state issued ID was acceptable.![]()
That’s a pain as I’m going to the US in June, haha. My friend was served with his international driving licence at the age of 20 in New York though, so perhaps it’s just the particular off-licence being hostile or cautious? I think licensing laws are laxer in the UK.
But they’re not looking to see if the bill, sent to Saint Cad at 1234 Any Street is for service at 1234 Any Street, just that some official corporate entity is sending important pieces of mail to Saint Cad at that address, thereby showing that Saint Cad lives at that address.
It’s especially galling given that they’ll accept a copy of your 1040, which proves absolutely zip, zero, zilch. Anybody can go to the library or post office, get a 1040 form, fill it out, sign it, not mail it in, and use that as “proof” of residency.
