Is there anybody close to you that has experience breeding parrots? Perhaps a Yahoo Yellow Pages search for breeders?
E-Sabbath, you sound like a good friend to your boss. That’s wonderful. There were a number of books in the various links people gave, but I’m pretty sure that weaning of very young birds won’t be covered by your run-of-the-mill bird care book. This really is a case of your boss needing to get direct help from experienced people. There may be good books out there, but the help is needed immediately. My wife has raised many breeds of birds from eggs (not parrots) and friends of hers have gone through the weaning of young parrot chicks. But even if they were right next to me as I typed, it would be impossible to convey information properly, especially as it still needs to get to your boss.
I think she needs to contact experienced pet store workers and/or bird club members. (See Peri’s link.) I’m assuming that the seller of the bird won’t be any help. Assuming the bird makes it OK, it will be a grand and glorious experience for her. They are incredibly cute, the bonding done through weaning is strong, and it will create memories she will have through a long relationship with the Gray. After all, it can’t be that much more difficult than raising a human infant.
You probably know this already, but she’s going to need a lot of extra help at work. She should probably plan on bringing the bird into work (if it is a safe environment) due to the frequent feedings needed.
Can you please keep us posted about progress of the bird and your boss?
Absolutely, re above. I’ve handfed several hatchlings, parrots and softbills, and it is not a job for the novice.
Your boss needs experienced help immediately, today, this morning.
Not that I want to be alarming… but this IS an emergency.
Your boss needs to get some expert help for that baby bird right now. A vet, a responsible breeder (which the one who sold this bird doesn’t seem to be), a wildlife rehab specialist, your local zoo… someone who has had real experience with hand-on infant bird care.
Ohhhh!!! Makes me so angry! Not at you or your boss, but the person who put the humans and baby bird in this position.
The good news is this can work - but she needs to get help as soon as possible.
Do keep us informed.
We have found a parrot club near her house, the parrot is healthy and apparently happy, standing for seconds at a time, and responding to people. His name, by the way, is Chico. He is currently living in a glass aquarium liberally papered with shavings, and he nests quite happily in it near the heat lamp.
Again, she will be going to the parrot club, we have a list of nearby vets she will be contacting, and the bird appears happy.
Keep in mind that birds have very different metabolisms from mammals; some birds can die of dehydration or starvation is a matter of hours, not days or weeks. Thus the panicky tone of some of our responses. Please make sure your boss knows this, and is planning on visiting a club meeting or a bird vet IMMEDIATELY, not next week.
Any updates? How’s the li’l guy doing?
Yeah, how’s the bird doing?
Inquiring minds wanna know… And, we’re concerned too.
Concerning parrots, I hear the Norwegian Blue has beautiful plumage, trouble is, all it does is lay around pining for the fiords. (a week-old thread on parrots and nobody has said this yet?)
Seriously, I hope your little guy is doing well.
Monday morning update!
Chico’s happy, Chico’s standing and watching and screeching like a baby parrot. His tail feathers are coming in bright red, his wing feathers less so. He responds to voices, mostly by being quiet, and listening.
I got a digital camera, and I’m going to lend it to her to try to get pictures.
Thanks for the update! It sounds as if things are going well. I’m glad you get to be a part of it too. How is your boss handling it all? Are you carrying extra burden at work?
Pictures would be great. (Ooh, lookada cute baby parrot )
Any updates? How’s the l’il guy doing?
