Arrested Development Appreciation Thread

Pardon me for bumping this thread, but at least I did a search before starting another identically-themed one…

I feel the need to express my appreciation for Arrested Development as well. I first saw it a few months back, liked it, but just kinda forgot about it. I then caught it the last two Sundays in a row and am now a fan. Rarely does a show (other than Family Guy) make me laugh out loud several times anymore. It’s off-the-wall but frighteningly normal at the same time. Plus, Jason Bateman is really easy on the eyes.

Mi hermano means ‘my brother’ in Spanish!”

lol Sunday’s was a great one too.

“Whoa whoa Mom always told us: if we’re ever confronted, just curl up into a ball.”

“I think that’s for bears.”

“Yeah I know.” (flash back to Buster getting accosted by a bully dressed up as a school-mascot-looking bear)

and…

“I wonder what it’d be like to get in a fight today…”

“Well you’d be a much bigger ball.”

“You’re the best, mon frere. That’s french for ‘brother’. I don’t know why I know that, I took 4 years of Spanish!”

This is a great show. I found it during the reruns this summer. I can’t wait for the new season to start.

I feel so sorry of George Micheal. He’s in love with his cousin. Poor guy.

Wait a minute, wait a minute! Someone please get me up to speed. Arrested Development is my favorite show, but I’ve only been watching it over the summer, after a friend introduced me to it. I recently saw what had to be the first episode, since George Sr. was arrested, and it introduced all the characters and situations, but I assumed it was a repeat. Now I’ve been watching it loyally for the last two months or so, but I assumed these were all part of a new second season. But all the people in this thread have been referring to the episodes I’ve been watching in posts going back to April and May. Are these reruns of the first season I’ve been watching this whole time? Let me know for sure!

In any case, I love this show more than anything else on television–and it’s the only non-animated sitcom I’ve enjoyed since before Seinfeld became overexposed and obnoxious. I really appreciate the lack of a laugh track and the “pseudo-documentary style” the show is filmed in. The ensemble cast is perfect, especially Jason Bateman’s understated style as the “straight man” for his horrible, quirky family. I’m so glad he has made a comeback with this show, and I really empathize with Michael as the only decent person on there. Jeffrey Tambor is brilliant whenever we see him, David Cross is always good, GOB and Buster crack me up, Portia de Rossi is gorgeous and surprisingly funny, and Maebe is super-cute as well. Poor George Michael!

I cannot wait for October, when the first season comes out on DVD–only I thought I hadn’t seen any of the first season yet, and now it looks like I’ve been watching it all along!

(Did anyone else know that Ron Howard is the narrator?)

I didn’t realize he narrates, but know he’s an Exec Producer, which may very well account (in part) for the show’s brilliance.

That’s what makes the Opie joke (Up there ^^^^^^) so funny.

-Joe, wonders what makes a guy name his daughter “Bryce Dallas”

w00t!

Reminder: Season One of Arrested Development is out on DVD today. Pick it up so Fox knows how many fans this show has. Looks like it’s under $30 at most places.

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon.com over a month ago, and they just e-mailed to say it shipped today! Woo hoo!

Same here, Big Bad. I recorded the marathon that aired on FX this past Saturday. Did anyone catch it?

Yikes, I had no idea! I would’ve tried to pimp the show out to more of my friends, people who share my sense of humor but rarely watch network sitcoms anymore. But I probably would have avoided it on purpose, considering I just bought the whole season, and I haven’t seen the majority of the episodes yet.

A few of my favorites.

Lucille: Buster’s studied business, right?
Buster: 19th Century Agrarian Business… but, the principles are still the same. Tell me this: are we at all concerned about an uprising?

Ethics Teacher: Do you have a wife?
Michael: Yes, but, she’s dead.
[laughter]
ET: Were you ever married?
Michael: Yeah… She died.

My absolute favorite scene is when George Michael goes to visit Gob in the yacht, and you hear muffled voices and a splash, then Gob casually tosses the emergency floatation device overboard as he comes out with a big smile. A few moments later a woman in her underwear climbs out and walks past, and they both exchange a cheerful “Good Morning!”
