I have to agree with the people questioning the wisdom of a movie- I loved the series itself but thought its strength (besides being marvellously subtle, well-written, and funny!) was that it was very much a TV show and played with the conventions of Reality-esque TV shows. I just don’t know how well that’s going to translate into a movie.
I am, however, very much looking forward to the new episodes- although it’d be nice if they’d go for a full series rather than an abbreviated run.
Agreed. The narration was essential. Howard always added a lot.
I have high hopes for new episodes but we shall see. Sequels don’t pan out very often. But if the same person’s running it that should definitely help matters.
Bateman is doing quite well for himself these days, and most of the others are working steadily. That having been said, Arrested Development had one of those gestalt casts which was more than the sum of its parts. Having access to some of Televison’s Elder Statesmen(Howard, Winkler) couldn’t have hurt. It was very much a meta-show and people who know anything about production tended to find it even funnier than the average Joe. I thought it was a brilliant satire of sitcoms, the kind of thing only people who know the artform inside and out could pull off. It was almost like a roast of the medium in the medium, if that makes sense.
The parts which fell flat for the average viewer were the most brilliant bits of satire for the insider. The overly-communicative narrator, who gives away spoilers for later events in the episode was brilliant.
